Inspired Pacquiao ready for Marquez

LAS VEGAS - Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao has never looked so motivated to trainer Freddie Roach as he has in training to fight Juan Manuel Marquez next week and silence the Mexican fighter's taunts.

Pacquiao defends his World Boxing Organization welterweight crown against Marquez on November 12 at Las Vegas, the third fight in a trilogy that began with a 2004 draw and continued when "Pac-Man" won a 2008 split decision.

With one point on one judge's scorecard all that has separated the fighters through 24 rounds, Marquez has long argued he beat Pacquiao twice, even wearing a shirt that said, "I beat Pacquiao twice" to a pre-fight appearance in Manila.

"He's claiming he was robbed in the last two fights. This third fight will be the answer to all of that," Pacquiao said Wednesday.

"I'm not saying I'm going to knock him out but I have trained very hard for this fight. Whatever comes will come now. I have put in the hard work. I'm ready for this fight."

A photograph of Marquez adorns a wall behind the punching bag at the Los Angeles-area gymnasium where Pacquiao works out, a constant reminder and motivating force for the Philippines Congressman.

"I've never seen him as motivated as I have for this fight," Roach said. "Marquez went to the Philippines and embarrassed him, said a few things. That has pushed him to work harder in training camp.

"Manny Pacquiao is on fire right now. He's training very well. He has a little spark."

Pacquiao, 53-3 with two drawn and 38 knockouts, has won 14 successive fights and seven in a row since his narrow decision over Marquez, the closest fight of his current run that has seen victories over Oscar de la Hoya, Ricky Hatton and Shane Mosley.

And the southpaw star expects this fight with Marquez to be more intense than the previous thrillers.

"I believe this fight will be a much more exciting fight," Pacquiao said. "His style and mine are very similar. There is going to be a lot of boxing in the ring. I use my power better. He is improving. So it's going to be better."

"I never underestimate Marquez. I train hard for this fight. I feel strong. In the last four years I've changed a lot."

Marquez, 53-5 with one drawn and 39 knockouts, is 5-1 since losing to Pacquiao, the only loss coming by unanimous decision to unbeaten US star Floyd Mayweather in 2009 in Marquez's only prior welterweight outing before Pacquiao.

"He looks like he's working hard. He's bigger and stronger," Roach said. "He has changed his style a little bit. He needs to because we're working hard to beat him. Manny is ready. If he wants to come at him, we'll be ready."

Pacquiao has juggled his lawmaker responsibilities with singing, boxing and promotional appearances, but swears he has not been distracted from his goal of proving once and for all he is superior to Marquez.

"It's a good example to boxers. I can balance it," Pacquiao said. "I feel I can focus and concentrate hard for this fight. I have to sit outside all of the distractions."

Roach has seen "Pac-Man" flip the switch when he straps on his gloves.

"Once he comes in the gym door, it's nothing but work, work, work," Roach said. "If he wants to go sing after that, I have no problem with that at all. That's Manny Pacquiao." — AFP

MANILA, Philippines – For veteran boxing promoters Bob Arum and Don King, a battle between boxing superstars Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, Jr. will eventually happen.

Arum, who has repeatedly tried to put both fighters in one boxing ring, claimed that the much sought “Fight of the Century” is not really hard to arrange.

"That fight is not hard to make," the Top Rank Promotions chief said in Boxing Fanhouse.com.

Arum now works closely with King and his Don King Promotions, which is reportedly wooing Mayweather.

King said that in the end, both Pacquiao and Mayweather will eventually come to an agreement, which is something that failed to happen twice already.

"The two of them, meeting is inevitable. They should meet," he said.

King and Arum, once known for their fierce rivalry in the industry of boxing promotions, are now working in tandem to hype up the Miguel Cotto-Ricardo Mayorga fight.

‘Floyd has to say yes’

But Arum said that for the monumental fight to push through, Mayweather will have to do one thing.

“All Floyd Mayweather has to do is to say, yes, and everything else would fall into place," said the veteran boxing promoter.

Mayweather has been inactive from boxing since defeating “Sugar” Shane Mosley in May 2010. He is currently facing legal troubles for allegedly assaulting his former girlfriend and poking his finger at a security officer’s face.

However, King is confident that the undefeated boxer will return to boxing.

"Floyd Mayweather will fight again. Floyd Mayweather, in my humble opinion, is the best fighter in the world. He can fight anybody and everybody," he said.

He added that the controversial boxer, who has a 41-0 professional record, can even extend his unbeaten run without Pacquiao.

"Floyd, if he desires, could fight every three or four months, even without Pacquiao," he said.

Earlier this week, Mayweather assured his fans that he will face the Filipino champion provided that Pacquiao gets off his “power pellets."

"I'm gonna fight the Pacman when he is off the power pellets," he said, alluding that the pound-fro-pound champion is using performance enhancing drugs.

Pacquiao (52-3-2) is set to defend his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight crown against Mosley (46-6-1) on May 7.

Manny Pacquiao’s title showdown with Antonio Margarito suffered yet another stumbling block when the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) denied the request of the Mexican for a new boxing license with barely less than three months before his Nov. 13 fight with the Filipino ring icon.

A 5-1 vote decided the fate of the 32-year old Margarito to get his license back that was revoked by the same California boxing body for having caught the Tijuana native carrying a plaster-like substance in his hand wraps prior to his 2009 encounter with Sugar Shane Mosley at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

The verdict was another damaging blow in Margarito’s bid to earn back the respectability he lost following that embarrassing incident in January of last year, which culminated in a ninth round technical knockout loss to Mosley and yielded the World Boxing Association (WBA) super-welterweight title.

Following the ruling of the CSAC, Las Vegas, Nevada is also scraped out of the list as possible site for the Pacquiao-Margarito bout.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission earlier turned down a similar application by Margarito behind a 4-1 vote, insisting the 5-foot-11 Mexican boxer should apply a license first in California before the body could grant him one.

All states in the U.S. typically abide by rulings from other states, although they are not obligated to do so.

Turned down twice, Margarito’s team is now headed for Texas, hoping to finally get one there and make the Pacquiao fight happen at the Cowboys Stadium in Dallas.

The $1.3 billion state-of-the-art playing arena was host to Pacquiao’s March 13 fight against Joshua Clottey, whom the Filipino ring superstar dominated in a 12-round unanimous decision to retain his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title.

Top Rank Promotions chairman Bob Arum admitted Margarito has already applied for a Texas license and is confident of being given one.

So does Margarito’s lawyer, Daniel Petrocelli.

“I can’t see any other commission not finding Tony totally worthy of a license, whether it’s Texas, Nevada or any other state," said the high-profiled lawyer.

In the event Margarito fails to secure a license in the U.S, a best possible alternative is Mexico, a place Pacquiao hasn’t fought in and wouldn’t mind having the bout being held there.

A long shot site is Abu Dhabi.

In his testimony before the CSAC, Margarito insisted the way he did in the past that he wasn’t aware about his hand wraps being loaded and blamed the incident on his trainer, Javier Capetillo.

Robert Garcia has since replaced Capetillo, whom Margarito fired in the aftermath of the controversy.

But in its decision, the CSAC through commission member Steve Alexander stressed, `you can delegate authority, but not responsibility.

A five-hour Wednesday night meeting between promoter Bob Arum and Jerry Jones to discuss a Manny Pacquiao-Antonio Margarito bout Nov. 13 at Cowboys Stadium was described as "positive" by Arum spokesman Lee Samuels on Thursday.

The fighters would meet for the vacant WBC 154-pound title. "The next step is go to the licensing meeting on Aug. 18," Samuels said. "Then we could have a major announcement."

Margarito will be looking to regain his boxing license that was revoked by the California State Athletic Commission for having his hands illegally wrapped in a January 2009 bout he lost to Shane Mosley.

It would be the second consecutive bout at Cowboys Stadium for Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KOs), who will be going after his eighth world title against Margarito (38-6, 27 KOs.).

Pacquiao, who is from the Philippines, easily defeated Ghana's Joshua Clottey at Cowboys Stadium in March. That fight drew a crowd of 50,994. Arum has said he believes Margarito, who is from Tijuana, will attract enough Mexican and Mexican-American fans to push the gate to more than 70,000.

Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum believes that the fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather will be open again for negotiation in 2011. He has a strong feelings because of the rumors circling around the industry that Mayweather and Don King have been spending a lot of time together in the last two weeks.

Bob Arum mentioned that hed rather deal with DOn King than the Golden Boy Promotions, who is the current partner of Maywetaher in his last four fights.

Bob Arum was quoted in BoxingScene.com saying:

“It’s too late for the fall. So Pacquiao-Mayweather would be something in the spring,” Arum told Lem Satterfield. “Floyd has not signed officially with [promoter Don] King, but when he does, I'm sure that Don will talk to me and we’ll work it out.”

“My recommendation is that we do the fight in May, in which case, if Pacquiao is successful in November, that will give us six months to promote the fight,” added Arum, who currently ironing out the details of Pacquiao’s bout against Mexican Antonio Margarito on November 13.

Bob Arum also mentioned that he will meet with Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on Wednesday(US Time). He is considering the Cowboys Stadium as the venue of the Pacquiao-Margarito fights on November 2010.

“Jerry Jones, I consider a friend. I think that we’re going to make a deal. Jerry Jones knows that North Texas has a huge Hispanic population, and, particularly, a large Mexican American population,” stated Arum.

Margarito and Pacquiao will dispute the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) junior middleweight title.

Pacquiao to fight Margarito for junior middleweight championship

LAS VEGAS -- Manny Pacquiao will face Antonio Margarito for the vacant WBC junior middleweight championship on Nov. 13, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum confirmed to SI.com. The fight will take place in Las Vegas if Margarito, whose license was suspended last year, can get reinstated. If he can't, Arum plans to hold the fight in Monterrey, Mexico.

The decision for Pacquiao to face Margarito ends any possibility of a Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather fight in 2010.

Yahoo Sports first reported the Pacquiao-Margarito agreement.

Pacquiao last fought in March when he won a lopsided decision over Miguel Cotto. Margarito, who was suspended for one year after officials found a plaster-like substance in his hand wraps before his January 2009 loss to Shane Mosley, returned to the ring in May when he won a lackluster decision over Robert Garcia.

By fighting at 154-pounds, Pacquiao has the opportunity to win a world title in his seventh weight class.

Expectations were high for a Mayweather-Pacquiao showdown after Mayweather won a decisive victory over Mosley last May. However, negotiations took a bizarre twist last week. During a conference call with reporters last Friday, Arum detailed the negotiations that he claimed were conducted between Top Rank and Mayweather's advisor, Al Haymon, with HBO Sports President Ross Greenburg acting as an intermediary. According to Arum, terms of the deal -- which were believed to include a 50-50 split and some form of random drug testing -- were agreed to.

Three days later, another Mayweather advisor, Leonard Ellerbe, issued a statement saying no negotiations with Mayweather had taken place.

Multiple sources confirmed to SI.com that some form of negotiations did take place, all of which were facilitated by Greenburg. Last month, Oscar De La Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions, the company that represents Mayweather, reportedly told Univision that they were "very close" to an agreement.

"Them saying there were no negotiations is absolutely preposterous," Arum told SI.com. "All I can say is seven weeks ago Ross came to me, (and) said let's do it this way, this way the fight has a chance to be made. We spent the whole day going over details. He reported to me on meetings that he had and what Haymon was saying. Again. I have never said I talked to Haymon. Ross felt that we could get the deal done in that way. He was very optimistic. Two nights before (the) Yuri Foreman-Miguel Cotto fight [in June], when Pacquiao was in town, we had dinner. Ross said I think I am getting this thing done. He told it to Manny."

MANILA, Philippines - Juan Manuel Marquez and Juan “Baby Bull” Diaz slug it out in a title rematch of their 2009 Fight of the Year.

The two warriors went at each other Feb. 28 of last year at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, in a virtual slugfest filled with furious exchanges. Marquez came back from a slow start and pummeled Diaz later in the fight to score a ninth round technical knockout.

At the time referee Rafael Ramos stopped the fight, Marquez was ahead in one of the judges’ scorecard (77-75), while Diaz got the nod of the other one (77-75). The third judge had it tied at 76-76.

The dramatic ending and the explosiveness that typified each round earned it the 2009 Fight of the Year honor from the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA), ESPN.com, and the Ring Magazine.

One of Mexico’s legendary warriors, Marquez (50-5-1, 37 KOs) has won world titles in the featherweight, junior lightweight and lightweight divisions over the course of a 17-year pro career bound for the Hall of Fame.

Winner of six of his last eight bouts, the only losses coming at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Filipino Manny Pacquiao, Marquez remains on top of his game even at the advance age of 36.

On the other hand, Diaz has been fighting as a pro at the age of 16.

At 26, Diaz (35-3, 17 KOs) has practically grown up in the fight game and held the world lightweight title from 2004 to 2007.

A native of Houston Texas, he’s now looking to regain the crown in Las Vegas, where he has been unbeaten in four fights.

Floyd Mayweather’s camp says it never agreed to details of Manny Pacquiao fight

In response to deadline, Mayweather’s advisor says sides had never agreed to meet on Nov. 13

Floyd Mayweather's camp issued a statement Monday afternoon regarding recent comments made by Manny Pacquiao's promoter, Bob Arum.

At 11:59 p.m. on July 16, Arum held a conference call to inform media members that although both sides of the potential megafight had basically agreed on all points of a contract to meet Nov. 13, Mayweather's hesitancy to sign off on the deal had forced Top Rank to seek a new opponent for Pacquiao.

In a statement released Monday, Mayweather's advisor Leonard Ellerbe said that a deal between the two sides never was made as Arum had suggested.

"Here are the facts," the statement said. "(Mayweather's manager) Al Haymon, (Golden Boy Promotions CEO) Richard Schafer and myself speak to each other on a regular basis, and the truth is no negotiations have ever taken place, nor was there ever a deal agreed upon by Team Mayweather or Floyd Mayweather to fight Manny Pacquiao Nov. 13."

It was the first statement made by anyone on Mayweather's side since negotiations reportedly began following Mayweather's latest win over Shane Mosley on May 1. If it happens, the Pacquiao fight is expected to be the richest in boxing history with each fighter making as much as $60 million.

Both sides were put under a gag order by HBO during negotiations, a request that ended when Arum leaked to certain news sites that the deal was close in late June.

In his July 16 conference call, Arum admitted he hadn't been in direct contact with Mayweather's camp and that all negotiations were being relayed through HBO president Ross Greenburg.

Ellerbe's statement verified as much, saying that either Greenburg or Arum was lying about the negotiations. Not surprisingly, Ellerbe hinted that Arum, who once promoted Mayweather before the two had a falling out, was the culprit

"Either Ross Greenburg or Bob Arum is not telling the truth," Ellerbe said. "But history tells us who is lying."

Pacquiao is expected to now face either Miguel Cotto or Antonio Margarito on Nov. 13. According to Arum, a deal with either of those two could be made as quickly as next week.

“I have to discuss with Manny who he prefers then get everything put together,” said Top Rank chief Bob Arum during Friday’s teleconference, portions of which were relayed to The STAR by top-shelf publicist Fred Sternburg.

Arum said it’s all up to Pacquiao whether he wants to face Cotto a second time or take on Antonio Margarito for the first time. Either way, he gets a crack at an eighth world title in eight different weight divisions.

“It will be Manny’s decision.I do not have a preference.I do not want to prejudice the situation.I want Manny to decide,” said Arum, adding that a deal with either Cotto or Margarito could be made in 10 days.

But Arum made it clear that in that short period, Mayweather can still come up and say he wants the Super Fight with Pacquiao. But that’s as long as Arum can wait because there are certain time limitations to consider.

“He (Pacquiao) is a very intelligent guy and knows what the considerations are and whomever he selects is who we will go after and make the fight,” said Arum, generous enough to give Mayweather until last Friday to decide.

“Because I am dealing with another situation.I am representing a fighter who is also a congressman.He has legislative duties and commitments in the Philippines and I have really short windows to do various aspects of the promotion,” said the legendary promoter.

Regardless of who it’s going to be for Manny Pacquiao on Nov. 13 – Mexican Antonio Margarito or Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto – top trainer Freddie Roach believes the Filipino star will win hands-down.

“A hundred percent,” Roach told The Ring magazine’s on-line edition when staffer Michael Rosenthal suggested that the Mexican warrior charging into Pacquiao “would be as if Margarito would be walking into a meat grinder.”

Roach prefers to pit Pacquiao against Margarito simply because Cotto had already tasted the fury of Pacquiao’s punches last year.

“I just think Manny has his (Cotto) number,” said Roach, who guided Pacquiao to a smashing 12th-round stoppage over the Puerto Rican.

“I think Margarito would be more interesting for the fans. They’ve already seen Cotto,” he said. “Cotto was in the fight for about four rounds and that was about it. Margarito has been a pretty dominant fighter, except for the (Shane) Mosley fight. Cotto is at a higher weight now. And maybe there’s some interest because of the world title. And, who knows, maybe having Emanuel Steward in his corner will make a difference. That might add some interest.”

Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum is looking at either Cotto or Margarito as Pacquiao’s next foe after efforts to tap Floyd Mayweather the last several weeks proved futile.

Arum, however, said Saturday that Mayweather has another 10 days or so to make a contact while he talks with other fighters.

Arum said the Mayweather fight is not dead but now he must start making plans for the Asian superstar's next bout.

The clock – and not Manny Pacquiao – finally caught up with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Top Rank Promotions chairman Bob Arum said that Mayweather has failed to meet the Friday night deadline (Saturday in Manila) on whether or not to accept a lucrative November 13 showdown with the Filipino boxing superstar.

"(The Pacquiao-Mayweather bout is) dead when we conclude a deal with an opponent for Manny’s fight in November," Arum said.

Arum held a midnight conference call from Las Vegas to inform the world that he failed to hear anything from Mayweather regarding the latter's interest to go inside the ring with the fighting congressman from Sarangani.

"Floyd, for whatever reason, didn’t want to commit," said the 78-year old Harvard-schooled Arum, who promoted some of the richest bouts in boxing history, including the epic "Thrilla in Manila" and the super-fight pitting Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Tommy "The Hitman" Hearns.

"I’ve had no negotiations or discussions with any other fighter," Arum added. "This Friday was the end of the exclusivity agreement."

The 31-year old Pacquiao was hardly bothered by the failure to lure Mayweather in the ring for the second straight time.

"It’s okay with me if he doesn’t want to fight me. I’m always ready for any challenger," said Pacquiao, who attended the birthday party of chief of staff Jake Joson Friday night at The Republiq.

The Top Rank big boss made it clear however, that he’s not conceding about making the fight the world wants to see hopefully by next year. "He’ll (Pacquiao) look to do a fight with Floyd next year," Arum said.

The long-time boxing promoter doesn’t want to second-guess why Mayweather, for the second time in a row, refused to do a fight guaranteed to net him and Pacquiao at least $50 million each.

But he did mention that the coming August trial of Roger Mayweather, Floyd’s uncle and chief trainer, may have something to do with it.

The elder Mayweather is going to trial following a battery charge filed against him by a female boxer he once handled.

"I'm trying to rationalize it, and if it's because he may be reluctant to fight now because of the problems his uncle (and trainer, Roger Mayweather) has, then I understand it," Arum said.

"I know Manny would not want to go into a fight without the services of Freddie Roach. Presumably, Floyd feels the same way about going into a big fight like this without the services of his Uncle Roger."

The Top Rank chief revealed that he never negotiated with anybody from the Mayweather camp, but discussed the matter with Ross Greenberg, president of HBO sports, who acted as the sole intermediary between the two parties.

After Greenberg held a series of talks with both Arum and Mayweather’s adviser, Al Haymon, it appeared that both parties had come up with an acceptable offer, including the drug-testing issue that derailed last year’s initial negotiations for the fight, and a resolution seemed close to being reached.

Unfortunately, Mayweather would have none of it.

"Without knowing, I am sure that there is a very, very good reason that Floyd Mayweather has for not committing to a fight at this time," Arum said. "I really and truly believe that." Continue reading here...

Top Rank Inc., which promotes Pacquiao, has set up a timer on its official website that acts as a countdown for Mayweather to agree on facing Pacquiao.

The countdown timer, labeled as “’Money’ Time: Mayweather’s Decision,” has been placed on the topmost part of Top Rank’s website. As of posting time, Mayweather has one day and one hour to decide whether to face Pacquiao.

Top Rank chief Bob Arum said when the deadline lapses, he will look for other fights for Pacquiao, possibly against Antonio Margarito or a rematch with WBO junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto in November.

Arum earlier said Pacquiao has already agreed to the terms for the Mayweather bout, adding that it is now up to the Grand Rapids, Michigan-based boxer to give his nod of approval to finalize the fight.

Negotiations for a Pacquiao-Mayweather showdown, which is expected to be the richest fight in boxing history, had been hounded by issues on blood-testing protocol, with Mayweather insisting for random, Olympic-style blood testing.

The boxer-turned-Sarangani congressman said Mayweather deserves to win the honor as he is a good boxer.

“I'm happy for him na pinili siya ng ESPN. Siguro hindi naman siya masamang boksingero,” said Pacquiao.

He added that he is not really concerned about being edged by Mayweather for the ESPY plum this year since he has garnered numerous awards in his colorful boxing career.

“As a boxer, nakuha naman natin ang lahat ng mga award at siyempre ‘yung pinakamataas na award na nakuha natin 'yung Fighter of the Decade,” said Pacquiao.

Aside from winning the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) Fighter of the Decade award (2000-2009), he also won the BWAA Fighter of Year Award 3 times (2006, 2008 and 2009), Best Fighter ESPY award (2009) and the Ring Magazine Fighter of the Year award 3 times (2006, 2008 and 2009).

Pacman-Floyd in 2010 getting slim

Meanwhile, Pacquiao said the chance of having a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight on November 13 is getting slim.

He echoed the sentiments of his promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank.

Arum told Bob Velin of USA Today that he's frustrated with the negotiations with Golden Boy, which represents Mayweather.

"But I'm trying to rationalize it, and if it's because he may be reluctant to fight now because of the problems his uncle (and trainer, Roger Mayweather) has, then I understand it," Arum said in the report.

Roger is set to go on trial in August for a battery charge involving a female boxer he once trained.

"We have heard nothing from (Floyd)," Arum said. "But hey, it's not the end of the world. If it doesn't happen this year, hopefully it will happen next year."

Arum is also working out a possible Pacquiao fight against either former world champion Antonio Margarito or World Boxing Association (WBA) junior middleweight king Miguel Cotto.

Promoter Bob Arum believes that since Manny Pacquiao was elected as Congressman to Sarangani Province on May 10, the world champion boxer “can transform the Filipino nation, rid the country of corruption and be seen as a true leader.”

“We all know this century is going to be Asia’s century, with China, India and Malaysia on the rise, and they can go with that wave. This is an adventure far more important than landing with left and right hands in a ring,” promoter Arum told The Telegraph.

“I’m at an age that I probably won’t see this come to fruition, but I hope I do. I really see this kid who lived on the streets, who didn’t even graduate from high school, and whose learning came recently, becoming the instrument of change in his country.”

Arum told me he felt mesmerised by Pacquiao when he visited him during his election campaign. “I found out things there I couldn’t even believe, saw Manny speaking in different dialects, and although I could not understand what he was saying in his rallies, I could tell from the cadence just how he whipped up the crowd and that he is a fantastic orator. Not just good – fantastic.”

“In another era he could have been a leader. Had he come earlier he would have probably been the resistance leader against invading nations. People don’t really see that in the US in his boxing career because he’s not really confident speaking English.”

Surely it will be a shock to the system, fighting and learning to work in Congress ? “Sure. It occured to me that how will be be able to find the time, but a fighter has tremendous downtime. Manny fights twice a year, trains for a couple of months, and in between times he can study the legislation.”

FILIPINO boxer Manny Pacquiao, a seven-weight-division winner, is willing to fight former world champion Antonio Margarito outside the United States if his mega bout against unbeaten American Floyd Mayweather, Jr. would not go on. Pacquiao’s adviser Mike Koncz divulged to boxing.funhouse.com that Pacquiao (51-3-2 win-loss-draw with 38 knockouts) could also possibly hold a rematch against Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto (35-2 with 28 KOs).
Pacquiao seized Cotto’s World Boxing Organization’s welterweight belt in 2009.

For Margarito, he can’t fight Pacquiao in the US soil since his boxing license was revoked by the California State Athletic Commission after an illegal hand-wrapping scandal in January 2009 when he beat Cotto.

“We are looking at a venue outside of the US, and it doesn’t make a difference whether it’s Antonio Margarito or Miguel Cotto. It’s not Mexico, but until I have a concrete deal in place, I don’t want to divulge what country that is,” said Koncz.

Margarito (38-6 with 27 Kos) is coming off a 10-round unanimous decision last May against Roberto Garcia in a junior middleweight clash that was fought in Mexico, which licensed him for the bout.
Margarito could not still apply a license in Nevada last week.

“But it doesn’t eliminate a possible fight against Manny. If Manny decides to fight Margarito, just because he got denied in Nevada—that’s not going to squash the fight,” he added.

In fact insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports learned that Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz had met last night in Puerto Rico with WBO light middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and one of his trusted assistants apparently to look at the possibilities of a rematch in November should Mayweather fulfill his desire to take a break for one year and hopefully face Pacquiao in 2011.

However, there are those who believe Mayweather is biding for time to return, hoping that Pacquiao with the demands on him as a results-oriented congressman would quit boxing to concentrate on his role as a catalyst for change and a stimulator of economic growth in Sarangani which is one of the poorest regions in the country.

But Top Rank promoter Bob believes that even if he fights Mayweather this year or the next Pacquiao will continue to fight so he could earn and help the poor people in his province.

The reported meeting between Koncz and Cotto who is also promoted by Top Rank indicated that Team Pacquiao is looking at other options and a rematch with Cotto from whom Pacquiao won the WBO welterweight title with a 12th round TKO last November looms as a real possibility.

Both Arum and Koncz had told us some time ago that the attraction of a Cotto rematch is that Pacquiao would have an opportunity to win and cement his place in boxing history as the champion in eight different weight divisions.

Boxing enthusiasts consider this exciting and entertaining.

Mayweather Sr. just like his brother Roger Mayweather are just very supportive to Floyd Jr. which is only natural since they are family.

He trains with proper discipline leading to good physical condition at the time of the fight. He can also handle his negotiation by himself to get a favorable contract.

On the other hand, Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao, the “Boxer of the Decade”, can be considered a very rare species in the boxing world because of his unique style of boxing and training. Manny Pacquiao's promoter, Bob Arum, says the negotiations between him and Floyd Mayweather's handlers have ended and a final proposal has been sent to Mayweather for review and approval.

"It’s now up to Mayweather if he wants to fight (Manny Pacquiao)," Arum told The Bulletin in a phone interview.

Arum said that if Mayweather decides not to fight, he has no other recourse but to "look for somebody else."

It may be recalled that the negotiations for the highly publicized Mayweather-Pacquiao fight have been held almost in total secrecy as negotiators led by Bob Arum and Richard Schaefer were under gag order during the entire process.

Mayweather and Pacquiao were reportedly agreeable to a November fight date, and that the venue would be Las Vegas, Nevada.

At least two contentious issues have remained unresolved as of yesterday. These are the random drug test and fight purse issues. Arum did not say if he and Schaefer had agreed on the issues before sending the final recommendations to Mayweather for approval.

Arum announced earlier that he has lined up Miguel Cotto for a possible rematch with Pacquiao or a fight with Antonio Margarito if Mayweather declines the final proposal.

According to trainer Freddie Roach, WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao is ready to agree to all of Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s demands to make a super fight on November 13.

Because Pacquiao will agree to Mayweather's demands, including the request for random Olympic style drug testing, Roach is confident the fight with Mayweather will happen. He says Pacquiao will leave the ball in Mayweather's court to make the fight come off.

“At this point I feel that Manny is going to agree to everything,” Roach said to The Toronto Star. “That’s our bluff. We’re going to call his bluff. We’ll see…I can’t speak for Manny, I can’t speak for (Bob) Arum but I feel the fight will happen because Manny is going to call his bluff and say ‘let’s do it.’”

Pound for pound fighters Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr have made it to the elite Forbes Celebrity 100 for 2010 as the influential business magazine has published its listing on their website today.

Pacquiao is listed at #55 with an estimated earnings of $35 million from his two fights against Joshua Clottey and Miguel Cotto. Mayweather came in at #31 with an estimated earnings of $65 million from his fights against Juan Manuel Marquez in September last year ($25 million) and Sugar Shane Mosley last month ($40 million). Pacquiao also landed at #57 during last year's edition.

Pacquiao and Mayweather, who both fight in the same division in boxing, are still locked in negotiations for a fight that is said to break all financial records in the history of the sport.

Topping this year's list of Forbes Celebrity 100 are Oprah Winfrey at #1 followed Beyonce Knowles at #2 and James Cameroon at #3. Winfrey also was #1 in 2008, 2007 and 2005. Michael Jordan was #1 during the inaugural list in 1999.

World welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao officially added a new title -- Congressman.

Pacquiao was sworn in to the Philippines' House of Representatives on Monday in the southern province of Sarangani.

"He wants change," Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach, said of Pacquiao before the boxer won the election. "I think it's genuine. People see that he wants to help his country, and that's why they're voting. That's why they support him."

Pacquiao accepted his third Fighter of the Year award June 4 after a year that featured a spectacular second-round knockout of Ricky Hatton to win a 140-pound belt and a brutal 12th-round stoppage of Miguel Cotto that gave Pacquiao titles in a record seven divisions.

"When he fights they close down Parliament and all the terrorists call for a peace," Roach said in May, only half jokingly. "It's not going to change anything. They'll just announce him as Congressman Manny Pacquiao, that's all."

Promoter Bob Arum will continue work on perhaps the most highly anticipated fight in decades, between Pacquiao and the undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. The two nearly reached an agreement to fight earlier this year, but negotiations broke down when Mayweather insisted on Olympic-style drug testing and Pacquiao refused to have blood drawn within 24 days of a fight.

But Arum said that Pacquiao is now willing to have blood tests within 14 days of the fight, the cutoff point that Mayweather had agreed to in the first go-around.

Arum also said he believes the fight, which would likely happen in November, will end up in Las Vegas rather than Cowboys Stadium or another venue that could pack upward of 100,000 fans.

Mayweather snubbed as The Ring names Pacquiao No. 1

Manny Pacquiao has been given a boost by being named the best pound-for-pound boxer by The Ring magazine. This accolade is another snub in Floyd Mayweather Jnr’s direction and comes hot on the heels of “Pacman’s” fighter of the decade award.

The boxing bible, as The Ring proclaims, itself has been the main source of news and information for fight fans worldwide since the dawn of time. Certainly a credible source, full of undoubted experts, but it’s still just opinions. It doesn’t matter what ranking list you look at, it’s all entirely subjective.

Mayweather could feel hard done by with both The Ring and the fighter of the decade award. Before his retirement Mayweather was far and away No.1 and has almost had to prove himself again since his comeback. He still has a perfect record and in “Sugar” Shane Mosley he has fought better opposition in his last bout than Pacquiao, who came through against Joshua Clottey.

In terms of the fighter of the decade award as Floyd Mayweather Snr pointed out to FightHype.com “Pacquiao has two draws and a loss in this decade. Lil’ Floyd is undefeated in this decade and in his career.” Again the other side of the coin shows Pacman started his career at an earlier age and has fought more fights, 56 to Mayweather’s 41 and indeed taken 38 knockouts to “Money’s” 25, so read into that what you will.

With the same breath, though,consider the overall quality of opposition they have faced and it’s pretty even. Pacquiao scored more emphatic victories over Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton than Money did, although you could argue Mayweather got their first and softened them up.

However the Filipino has been a bit more forth going in fighting the tougher fights, stepping up to face Miguel Cotto last November, something Mayweather’s yet to do. He put in a very convincing virtuoso performance against “Junito”, consigning him to only his second defeat and making him look second rate.

Juan Manuel Marquez is another common opponent, Pacquiao faced a much younger and better version of him in a controversial 2004 draw and a very dubious win in 2008 saw Pacman through. In comparison Mayweather took on an ageing Marquez last year and battled his way to a comfortable if unexciting unanimous decision win.

Seven-division champion, Manny Pacquiao, will receive his milestone third, consecutive Fighter Of The Year Award, as well as his first honor as Fighter Of The Decade, on Friday night at the 85th annual Boxing Writers' Association of America Awards Dinner at The Roosevelt Hotel in New York City.

In victory, the 31-year-old Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 knockouts) ties three-time heavyweight champion, Muhammad Ali, and, four-time heavyweight titlist, Evander Holyfield, as three-time recepients of the designation, whose official name is "The Sugar Ray Robinson Fighter Of The Year" award.

Also being honored on Friday is Pacquiao's Hall Of Fame chief cornerman, Freddie Roach, who will be named Trainer Of The Year for a record fourth consecutive time. Trainer Of The Year is named after the late Eddie Futch, who is Roach's mentor.

Also being recognized is February's 2009 Fight Of The Year between Juan Manuel Marquez and Juan Diaz, which ended with Marquez coming from behind to score a ninth-round knockout for the vacant WBO and WBA lightweight (135 pounds) titles.

The Fight Of The Year Award has been renamed in honor of Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, the latter of whom is expected to attend the event.

Pacquiao is 12-0, with eight knockouts since his last loss, a March of 2005 unanimous decision setback against Mexican great, Erik Morales.

A recent winner of a congressional seat in his native Philippines, Pacquiao's cross-over appeal has transformed him into an international superstar.

"Muhammad Ali was a beloved figure in his prime, but also a reviled figure. There were people on both sides of the political spectrum, particularly regarding the war in Vietnam. The ones that opposed it loved Ali, and the ones who were in favor of it didn't," his promoter, Bob Arum, has told FanHouse.

"But until he was long-retired, Ali was never the universally admired figure in this country and around the world like Manny Pacquiao, who is someone different," said Arum. "Anybody who is aware of Manny Pacqiao loves him, admires him, and there are no haters. There is no right or left when it comes to Manny Pacquiao. That's made him a more universally revered figure than Muhammad Ali."

Pacquiao's winning streak includes consecutive knockouts in four straight fights over former world champs, David Diaz, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, and, Miguel Cotto, respectively, in nine, eight, two, and, 12 rounds before earning a March unanimous decision over former titlist, Joshua Clottey.

The run also comprises having twice avenged the loss to Morales, whom he stopped in 10, and, three rounds, in January and November 2006.

After loss to Manny Pacquiao Miguel Cotto takes on Yuri Foreman

Just call Yuri Foreman the “Rodney Dangerfield” of the boxing world - he “just can’t get no respect”. Despite holding the WBA light middleweight title, few people consider him to be an elite-level fighter. Much of this comes from his lack of pedigree before winning the title - before beating Daniel Santos for the title in November 2009, Foreman had a lack of wins against quality opponents. Also hurting him in gaining respect in the boxing community is his lack of power. He has a perfect 28-0 record but has racked up just 8 KOs during his career - hardly numbers that make him considered to be a dangerous opponent.

So it’s clear that Foreman has a lot of gain and also a lot to lose in his fight on June 5 against Miguel Cotto. The sheer nature and location of the fight automatically elevates its importance - it’s the first fight held at the new Yankee Stadium since it was opened two years ago. But the bout clearly means much more to Foreman’s career than the historical footnote that would come with opening boxing at the site with a win.

Beating Cotto would finally give Foreman a signature victory against a world-class opponent. Beating Cotto would make it very difficult for critics to claim that Foreman is a one-trick pony or a champion created by careful selection of opponents. Unlike Foreman, Cotto is one of the most highly-respected fighters of his generation. He’s considered a warrior who has fought his share of battles over the years and is ready for any obstacle. A victory over Cotto would proven to many people that Foreman’s blazing hand speed and defensive prowess can lead him to victory against even the toughest opponent.

Despite having a distinguished career and place in the Hall of Fame already cemented, Cotto also has a lot on the line in this fight as well. His last fight was a brutal contest against Manny Pacquiao which saw him battered like never before. Although he showed the heart of a champion and refused to quit, he was unable to deal with the speed and precision of Pacquiao’s punches, leading to the fight being stopped by referee Kenny Bayless in the 12th round. It was an embarrassing defeat for one of the proudest fighters in the sport.

Pacquiao vs Mayweather : Americans Crucified Pacquiao

Pacquiao – Mayweather fight is one of the biggest and expected fight of the year. But it seems the ball is still rolling and unsure if this fight will happen. Let me stand first on my title, sorry but I’m not being a racist here or something. I just want to clarify and see why people in the US now doubts Manny Pacquiao on using PEDs.

For me Pacquiao is right when he filed a lawsuit against Mayweather and his camp on the issue of using PEDs. Manny Pacquiao runs in boxing for almost 15 years and he has a clean record. I don’t know why Floyd Mayweather pull this string of making some allegation that the number 1 pound for pound fighter is on PEDs.

This is the trend and people now thinks and doubt Pacman because of Floyd’s allegation.

After reading some post from other writer they seem to side on Mayweather now, look at the boxing industry on this point. For me it’s better to watch a UFC pay per view event more than watching a boxing match but unless if Pacman is fighting then make sure I will be watching his fight.

Boxing is now getting boring fights, some says Boxing is not just only knock outs because it’s a sweet science.

On the other why the Sports commission is allowing Mayweather to dictate the fight? The NSAC should be looking also on this point if Mayweather cut this crap on insisting a “CLEAN SPORT” then NSAC should be doing it also in other boxing fights.

Now some of the people hates and even doubt Pacman on his career but the Filipino Pride is not moved because of this issue regarding his performance.

Right now I have to agree on the blood testing but I’m not really into it just to make the fight happen. NSAC is doing there job for decades now and Floyd is trying to make a move that the commission is not doing their position well enough.

Well if Mayweather insists more than 14 days then I suggest that Pacquiao should stop negotiating with Mayweather, he better hang up his gloves and serve the people.

Me, agreeing on Mayweather’s antics of blood testing is just to have Pacquiao a chance of beating Floyd Mayweather’s face badly.

Pacquiao relents on pre-fight tests

MANILA, Philippines—This time, Manny Pacquiao is giving Floyd Mayweather Jr. little room to reject their proposed megabuck bout on Nov. 13.

After thumbing down Mayweather’s demand for Olympic drug testing and canceling their fight set on March 13, congressman-elect Pacquiao is now willing to deviate from his hard-line stance.

Pacquiao, intent on forging what could be boxing’s biggest showdown ever, said he is now amenable to undergo random drug and urine testing 14 days before the fight.

Originally, Pacquiao wanted the tests to be held at least 24 days before the fight, saying blood extraction procedures made him weak.

The 31-year-old Pacquiao said he felt weak when he fought and lost by unanimous decision to Erik Morales the first time they met in March 2005 as a result of the late tests.

Pacquiao went on to beat the Mexican great in their next two bouts.

“Whatever is agreed upon, it’s OK with me,” Pacquiao said in Filipino. “I trust Mr. (Bob) Arum on this matter.”

Pacquiao, who’s been proclaimed as winner of Sarangani’s lone congressional district, flew in from Gen. Santos City on Tuesday to meet with President-apparent Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.

The seven-division champ shot a Ginebra commercial on Wednesday and visited his commercial building in Manila’s Quiapo district Thursday night with confidant Rex “Wakee” Salud.

Pacquiao, who will take a crash course on governance at the University of the Philippines, said he’s willing to be tested two weeks before fight night provided that the amount of blood to be taken would be minimal.

MANILA, Philippines – World Boxing champion and now Sarangani Representative Manny Pacquiao visited Senator Benigno Aquino III in his home Tuesday night, a spokesman for the winning presidential candidate said Wednesday.

“Manny Pacquiao paid a courtesy call to Aquino at his home in Times street last night together with his wife Jinkee and his entourage. They talked about the situation in Sarangani and he expressed his support for the President as a member of the House [of Representatives],” said Edwin Lacierda.

Aquino, in a text message to INQUIRER.net on Wednesday, confirmed the meeting, saying, "We met last night."

It was Pacquiao who sought the meeting with Aquino, according to sources who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to media.

The first source said the meeting lasted for only less than an hour.

But during the meeting, the same source said, Pacquiao made no explanation or offered no apologies to Aquino as to why he supported his rival in the presidential race, Senator Manny Villar.

"Walang paliwanag kung bakit nag Villar o nagpaumanhin. It was a friendly meeting [He did not offer any explanation or apology as to why he supported Villar]," said the source.

During the campaign, Pacquiao came out with a television advertisement criticizing Aquino, saying "Laban ng Laban wala namang napatunayan [Always fighting but has not proven anything]."

But this issue, the source said, did not crop up in the meeting.

The second source confirmed Lacierda’s statement, saying the discussion was only about Pacquiao's concerns in his province.

"Nakikipagkaibigan lang siya [Pacquiao]...He's reaching out," said the first source.

Asked why Aquino entertained Pacquiao despite his support for Villar during the elections, the source said, "He's just very polite."

MANILA, Philippines – Seven-division world champion Manny Pacquiao assured his fans that he can still fight in blockbuster bouts even if he takes on a new role as congressman of Sarangani Province.

In an Agence France-Presse article, Pacquiao said: “It just needs discipline. You just need time management.”

Pacquiao was proclaimed congressman-elect of Sarangani Province after scoring a landslide victory over Roy Chiongbian.

However, he said that boxing will have to take a back seat for the moment.

“For now, I will focus on service,” he declared.

“I am happy that I won and that people voted for me but it is also a great responsibility and so I must help my countrymen.”

The Ring Magazine pound-for-pound king said he plans to help his constituents by providing them with medical assistance, education and livelihood programs.

Fight for the country

Two sports analysts also believe that Pacquiao’s newfound job will not have much effect on his performance inside the boxing ring.

Bill Velasco and Boyet Sison, co-hosts of ANC’s “Hardball,” both think that even as Pacquiao functions as representative of Sarangani Province, the boxer will remain focused once he starts training again for a possible fight in November.

Khan overpowers Malignaggi in US boxing debut

Former British Olympian Amir Khan fashioned a stunning American debut, easily stopping Paulie Malignaggi in the 11th round of a one-sided fight .

The 23-year-old Khan retained his World Boxing Association super lightweight title with a technical knockout of Brooklyn native Malignaggi.

Khan (23-1, 17 KOs) was clearly the better fighter, landing jabs and head shots. Referee Steve Smoger finally stopped the bout at 1:25 of the 11th round after the 29-year-old Malignaggi failed to put up a defence.

"I think with my speed I can catch any fighter," Khan said. "I knew I was going to catch him and I could see him getting his head knocked back. I could see him get frustrated."

Malignaggi's face was swollen and he had to plead with the ringside doctor before the 11th round just to let him continue.

Malignaggi (27-4) didn't argue with the decision, tapping his chest and congratulating Khan on the win.

Up next in the 140 pound class for Khan could be fighters such as Marcos Maidana and fellow titleholders Timothy Bradley and Devon Alexander.

This was the second title defence for Khan, who landed 132 more punches than the American.

"He knows how to win rounds, man," Malignaggi said. "He has a lot of ability."

MANILA, Philippines – Prized boxing trainer Freddie Roach has filed a libel complaint against former world champion Paulie Malignaggi for his “drug slur” against superstar Manny Pacquiao and UK’s Amir Khan.

According to a report by Telegraph.co.uk’s Gareth Davies, Roach filed the libel rap against the former International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior welterweight champion several weeks ago for implying that Pacquiao and Khan might be using performance enhancing drugs (PEDs).

“Amir and Manny work with me and my trainers. I know what goes on in my gym and I've had enough of this rubbish. That's why we've issued a libel suit,” said Roach.

Malignaggi is set to battle Khan in New York City on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) for the World Boxing Association (WBA) junior welterweight title.

The boxers nearly came to blows during the official weigh-in on Friday (Saturday in Manila) when tension between the fighters and their entourages sparked a hysterical outbreak of pushing and shoving that security officers had to break up.

"Paulie brought it up that Amir might be on something because he trains with us. My guys are clean. It's an insult because the success of my fighters is down to hard work," said Roach.

Malignaggi has repeatedly been harping about Pacquiao possibly taking drugs since he has been able to beat bigger opponents like Miguel Cotto and Oscar de la Hoya.

A lot happened during the first failed negotiations for a fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao. From insults to insinuations to accusations, these were not peace talks.

Pacquiao filed a defamation suit against Mayweather, his uncle and trainer, Roger; his father, Floyd Sr.; and Golden Boy executives Oscar De La Hoya and Richard Schaefer for comments about Pacquiao's possible use of performance-enhancing drugs.

(We accent the word "possible" because Pacquiao never tested positive for PEDs).

The contentious nature of the first round of discussions makes one wonder if a second round will bear fruit. Also, how bad would it be for boxing if it can't get the top two pound-for-pound fighters to square off in what would be one of the most anticipated fights in history and would break all monetary and pay-per-view records?

Bob Arum, who promotes Pacquiao, scoffed when asked about that.

"I don't want to dwell on the negative and I don't want to really answer that question that way," Arum said. "I would say it would be absolutely great for the sport for the fight to happen and it would focus the entire world's attention on the sport of boxing.

"That is the way I would look at that situation rather than look at how bad it would be if it didn't happen."

Schaefer likely will handle Mayweather's side - Golden Boy helps Mayweather promote his fights - and played his own game of dodge ball when the subject was broached.

"I would love to see it," Schaefer said. "But you don't always see Kobe and LeBron in the NBA Finals. You don't always see Brazil and Italy in the World Cup finals. We haven't seen the two best MMA pound-for-pound fighters against each other. And the list goes on and on.

"Would I love to see it? Absolutely."

Promoter Bob Arum Calls Manny Pacquiao 'The Pinacle'

Bob Arum's nearly 43 years in boxing began with the Muhammad Ali victory over George Chuvalo, and it was his first of 26 fights involving the man many call "The Greatest."

A 78-year-old Harvard graduate and attorney, Arum also handled every fight of Marvelous Marvin Hagler's career, as well as substantial portions of those of Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Arum also helped to mastermind the comeback of George Foreman, who became the oldest man to win a heavyweight championship when he knocked out Michael Moorer in the 10th-round at the age of 45 in November of 1994.

But when it comes to experiences with fighters, there is nothing that ranks higher in Arum's stable than the promotional ride that he has taken with 31-year-old, Manny Pacquiao, a seven-division champion whose cross-over appeal has transformed him into an international super star.

"Muhammad Ali was a beloved figure in his prime, but also a reviled figure. There were people on both sides of the political spectrum, particularly regarding the war in Vietnam. The ones that opposed it loved Ali, and the ones who were in favor of it didn't," Arum told FanHouse during an interview in December.

"But until he was long-retired, Ali was never the universally admired figure in this country and around the world like Manny Pacquiao, who is someone different," said Arum. "Anybody who is aware of Manny Pacqiao loves him, admires him, and there are no haters. There is no right or left when it comes to Manny Pacquiao. That's made him a more, universally revered figure than Muhammad Ali."

Pacquiao is 51-3-2, with 38 knockouts, including victories in his past 12 consecutive match ups and eight knockouts during that time.

But the fight that would top off Arum's career, which is in its twilight, would be a megabout between unbeaten Floyd Mayweather (41-0, 25 KOs), and, Pacquiao.

It is a bout that stands to rake in upwards of $40 million for each combatant, making it the richest and most lucrative in the history of boxing.

A previous attempt at making Mayweather-Pacquiao for March 13 failed during a negotiations' impasse over random drug testing.

But during a national conference call on Wednesday, Arum said that he is motivated to be a part of one of the most significant fights of his time.

"Yeah, to be involved in a big fight like Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather," said Arum, "that would be one of the great experiences of my career."

Arum said that he has reserved the date of Nov. 13 for the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and The Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

On March 13, Pacquiao scored a unanimous decision victory over Joshua Clottey (35-4, 20 KOs) in the first-ever boxing match to be held at The Dallas Cowboys' Stadium, earning $12 million before a crowd of 51,000.

Arum has regenerated the notion of bouts in outdoor stadiums, following up with a June 5, WBA junior middleweight (154 pounds) championship fight featuring titlist, Yuri Foreman (28-0, eight KOs), of Brooklyn, and, Puerto Rico's three-time, former world champion, Miguel Cotto, at the new Yankees' Stadium.

Billed as "The Stadium Slugfest," Foreman-Cotto marks the return of boxing to a Yankees' home stadium for the first time since Sept. 28, 1976, when Arum promoted Muhammed Ali's 15-round decision victory over Ken Norton at the original Yankees' Stadium.

"The stadiums are important because they enable the most possible people to watch the event. It's not unique to boxing. Look at the NCAA. The Regional finals and the Final Four, all now take place in massive venues," said Arum, whose milestone will be the first boxing event at the new Yankees Stadium.

Pacquiao says he'll agree to drug testing with a 24-day cutoff

The biggest fight in boxing is now on the table.

Manny Pacquiao dominated Joshua Clottey over 12 rounds at Cowboys Stadium in March. Floyd Mayweather Jr., dominated Shane Mosley on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

There are two issues at hand in the Mayweather-Pacquiao negotiations: the issue of money and the random Olympic-style drug testing. The two sides sat down earlier this year and the two fighters could not agree on the cut-off date for the random drug testing. Following Saturday's win over Mosley, Mayweather said the Pacquiao fight could not be made without Olympic-style drug testing.

"If Manny Pacquiao can take a blood and urine test then we have a fight,'' Mayweather said. "If not, no fight.''

According to several reports, Pacquiao watched the fight in the Philippines and afterwards spoke to Manilla radio station DZBB. Pacquiao said that he's willing to agree to the random blood testing, but only if the testing has a cutoff date of 24 days.

"For me, as long as the drug test is not done close to the match, I'll agree because if they'll get blood from me close to the match, it will be a disadvantage for me because I'm smaller and he's big,'' Pacquiao said.

Mayweather dominates Mosley, stays unbeaten

LAS VEGAS -- Floyd Mayweather Jr. is usually content to just win a fight. This time, though, Money Mayweather wanted to earn his cash.

Fighting more aggressively than usual, Mayweather overcame a near knockdown in the second round Saturday night to dominate the rest of the way and win a lopsided 12-round decision over Shane Mosley in their welterweight showdown.
"I wanted to give the fans what they wanted to see, a toe-to-toe battle," Mayweather said. "It wasn't the same style for me but I wanted to be aggressive and I knew I could do it."

Boxing's biggest box office draw remained undefeated in 41 fights, but not before giving his fans and his corner a scare when a right hand to the side of his head buckled his knees a minute into the second, and he had to grab Mosley to avoid going down. Mosley landed another right later in the round, but the rest of the night belonged to Mayweather.

If he didn't please everyone, it was because he couldn't knock out Mosley. But Mayweather won every minute of every round after the second and the normally defensive-minded fighter kept after Mosley until the final bell in a masterful performance that earned him every dollar of his guaranteed $22.5 million payday.

"I think we could have pressed the attack a lot earlier, and then we could have got the knockout," Mayweather said.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. must do more than win Saturday.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is undefeated, a six-time world champion and perhaps the biggest draw in boxing.

Shane Mosley is a great champion who's past his prime and probably couldn't carry a pay-per-view card by himself.

However, it's Mayweather who has the most to prove from Saturday night's welterweight bout in Las Vegas (HBO Pay-Per-View). He's likely the most-skilled boxer in the world. Instead of that distinction drawing him praise, Mayweather is reviled for his defense-first style, as well as his big mouth.

He prides himself on being the greatest ever (in large part to his 40-0 record) and at the same time he's in a slugfest to be considered the best boxer today.

Manny Pacquiao ostensibly holds that crown as much for his recent accomplishments as his penchant to be a warrior in the ring. Courage is what separates Mayweather and Pacquiao in many people's perceptions -- with Pacquiao being a gutty fighter while Mayweather hits and runs.

Whether that's right or wrong, it's irrelevant. That's what's out there. Mayweather's demand for Olympic-style drug testing -- previously unheard of in professional boxing -- sank a proposed mega-fight with Pacquiao and further perpetuated his negative perception.

"I don't care about shutting anybody up," Mayweather said during a recent conference call. "I don't care about shutting anybody up. I'm happy with myself. I'm happy with my career and I'm happy with my family."

It's true and it's not. He certainly marches to his own tune, but for a cocky and ego-driven athlete like he is, it must irk him that he's slighted (at least in his own mind) by the boxing community.

Pacquiao's camp refused the proposed dope testing and the Mayweathers, despite getting clearance from the Nevada Athletic Commission that the Filipino is drug free, pulled out of the negotiating table.

The renowned People's Champion found himself facing Joshua Clottey, who is a defensive-minded Ghanian fighter who refused to go head-to-head with Pacquiao.

Pacquiao will get a chance to see first hand the styles of both fighters who wanted to face him inside the ring for pride and big money.

The Mayweather-Mosley bout is expected to be a rapid-chess match as both are thinking fighters who always wait for every opportunity to strike. Both fighters also rely on their speed.

MANILA, Philippines – Former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. again took a swipe at international boxing star Manny Pacquiao, questioning the Filipino’s stature among boxing greats.

In a conference call about his upcoming fight against “Sugar” Shane Mosley, the controversial boxer downplayed Pacquiao’s sensational victories over Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cotto and Britain’s Ricky Hatton.

“He beat a Miguel Cotto who got pummeled with a cast and he beat a Ricky Hatton that got stretched by me… That’s not for me to put him in the Hall of Fame,” Mayweather said in a report posted on boxing.fighthype.com.

The Filipino stopped Cotto in 12 rounds last November to win the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title, his 7th in 7 weight classes.

Prior to facing Cotto, Pacquiao knocked out Hatton in just 2 rounds. It took Mayweather 10 rounds to stop the bull strong Briton.

The Boxing Writers Association of America thus picked the Filipino over Mayweather, Bernard Hopkins, Joe Calzaghe, Shane Mosley, Juan Manuel Marquez and Marco Antonio Barrera as the Fighter of the Decade.

Analysts also compared Pacquiao to the late boxing great Henry Armstrong, who simultaneously held world titles in 3 three different divisions.

The undefeated Mayweather also said that unlike him, the Filipino has suffered losses in his professional career, aside from struggling against counter punching expert Juan Manuel Marquez.

“Manny Pacquiao struggled twice, which we really know he got beat, struggled twice with Marquez, which we know he really lost. Right? And we know he been knocked out twice and he got outboxed by Erik Morales, but then they still give him Boxer of the Decade. So that’s another thing I don’t understand,” said Mayweather.

Shane Mosley believes he will stop Mayweather in their welterweight bout on May 1 in Las Vegas. If it happens as predicted, He will be the first fighter to beat Mayweather.

Mosley was quoted at sport.stv.tv saying,

"I think a lot of people who have fought Floyd have let his talking get to them and they go into the fight angry,” said Mosley, who has never been knocked out. “They are fighting with their emotions when they are in the ring. I'm not going to do that. I know how I want to fight Floyd and I know what I want to happen, so I am going to do what I have to do to win."

Evander Hollyfield(43-10-2, 28 KOs) takes the World Boxing Federation Heavy Weight title by stopping Frans Botha(47-5-3) in the eight round. Frans Botha is the defending champion and yielded the crown to Hollyfield.

The 47 years old Hollyfield knock out the 41 years old Botha with 2:05 left in the eighth, the later get up from his feet but the referee stop the fight later.

This fight was the first of Hollyfield after 16months. He was behind the scorecard of the two judges after the referee, Russell Mora stopped it.

Two judges, Jerry Roth and Glenn Feldman, had Botha ahead 67-66 when the fight was stopped. The other judge, Herb Santee, had it 69-64 for Holyfield.

Hollyfield mentioned to the media that he will seek more title fights.

"I'm going to be the undisputed world heavyweight champion," he said.

Holyfield fights Botha, doubters in ring tonight

Evander Holyfield refuses to go away.

The former four-time heavyweight champion insists he still has the skills to regain the world title, though he's 47, last held a belt nearly 10 years ago and has lost two fights in a row.

"I've been hearing for a while that I can't do it," he said. "All it does is light a fire under me to prove people wrong.

"I can still fight. I don't want to leave until I've become the undisputed heavyweight champion one more time. That's been my goal the entire time."

If Holyfield can't beat 41-year-old Frans Botha tonight at the Thomas & Mack Center, he might as well leave the ring for good. But Holyfield (42-10-2, 27 knockouts) said this fight is a step toward meeting the Klitschko brothers, Wladimir and Vitali, who own three of the four titles.

"After I whup up on Botha, I want the Klitschkos," said Holyfield, who last won a heavyweight title Aug. 12, 2000, when he beat John Ruiz at Paris Las Vegas for the vacant WBA belt.

If Holyfield wins -- he's a 3½-1 favorite -- he'll do so largely in anonymity. By Friday afternoon, only 2,000 tickets had been sold, leaving promoter Crown Boxing, which is paying Holyfield $150,000 plus a pay-per-view percentage, to hope for a large walk-up crowd. Even $25 lower-bowl seats are going unsold.

Holyfield-Botha is also going head to head against a Top Rank card at the Hard Rock Hotel that has tickets priced as low as $20. There's also the Andre Berto-Carlos Quintana welterweight fight on HBO. And if that wasn't enough competition, there's UFC 112, a mixed martial arts card in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, available on pay per view.

Fil-Ams demand better apology from Carolla over Pacquiao slur

NEW YORK - Author and psychologist Dr. Kevin Nadal has defended the Filipino community against racial slurs before, having led protests against ABC in 2007 after the network’s hit show Desperate Housewives made a slanderous comment about the Philippines’ reputation in the medical community.

ABC apologized and made amends after the snafu.

Now, Nadal has something—or someone, rather—new to focus on. Comedian and radio personality Adam Carolla, known as former host of Loveline with Dr. Drew, and The Man Show, recently disparaged boxer Manny Pacquiao and the Philippines in his podcast.

“Here’s how you know your country doesn’t have a lot going for it when everything is about Manny Pacquiao. Get a ***ing life as a country,” Carolla said. Carolla also said Pacquiao was illiterate, that the Philippines was only known for the boxer and its sex tourism industry, and that Pacquiao prays over chicken bones.

Nadal immediately published an online petition demanding an apology from Carolla.

“We need to fight every time and anytime someone does anything that’s unjust or anything that is discriminatory towards our community,” Nadal said.

With more than 3,000 signatures and counting, it’s now the number one petition on petitiononline.com.

Carolla has since apologized via his Twitter page, saying he’s sorry he offended many Filipinos, and that while he tries to be “provocative” and “funny,” he “crossed the line,” adding later that Manny is a great fighter.

Roach picks Floyd over Mosley

MANILA, Philippines - Manny Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach is predicting that Floyd Mayweather Jr. will beat WBA welterweight champion Sugar Shane Mosley by decision in their 12-round bout in Las Vegas on May 1.

If Mayweather dethrones Mosley, it will only be logical for Pretty Boy to face Pacquiao, who holds the WBO title, in a unification showdown. Pacquiao is now recognized as the world’s No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter, an honor that was once Mayweather’s until he retired over two years ago. Mayweather is now back in active ring duty and itching to reclaim his throne.

“Shane’s my friend and I hope he wins but he has trouble with speed and movement and likes guys to come to him so it’s going to be difficult,” said Roach in a guest column on London’s Boxing News.

Roach, who has been involved in a word war with Mayweather’s foul-mouthed father Floyd Sr., seemed reconciliatory in remarking that “I like Floyd as a person ...out of the Mayweathers, he’s one of the better ones.”

The celebrated Wild Card Gym of Los Angeles owner said Mayweather has never disrespected him and always calls him Mr. Roach. But in anticipation of a duel with Pacquiao, Roach said it’s likely that Mayweather will turn against him in the process of hyping what is being billed as the “Fight of the Decade.”

Hopkins beats Jones to scratch 17 year itch

(Reuters) - Bernard Hopkins won a unanimous decision against fellow American Roy Jones Jr. in tough fight on Saturday night, finally avenging a 1993 defeat in a long-delayed re-match.

There were no knockdowns in a bout that was characterized by caution but punctuated by stoppages for accidental fouls and a near-riot in the ring at the end of the sixth round.

"It was kind of rough," said 45-year-old Hopkins, who improved his record to 51-5-1. "Roy's a veteran. He was tying me up. I was tying him up. It was a good fight."

Jones, 54-7, frequently frustrated Hopkins with his effective defense but the 41-year-old rarely showed enough offense to win any of the rounds.

The pattern of each round was similar with each man feinting, Hopkins attempting to bull Jones to the ropes behind a jab and right hand and Jones looking to tie up or counter with short uppercuts inside.

"I was trying to smother him, so he couldn't counter me," said Hopkins. "He's still got speed."

The fight briefly erupted into life at the end of the sixth round.

Jones spun out of a clinch in the corner and landed a short punch to the back of Hopkins' head. Hopkins dropped to his knees and took several minutes to return to his feet.

When the round resumed, Hopkins attacked Jones with a furious flurry and the two men continued to exchange punches as the bell rang. Both corner teams and security officials entered the ring to separate the fighters and restore order.

Hopkins went down on two other occasions, from another rabbit punch and a low blow, while an accidental head butt in the eleventh round opened a gash on Jones's left eyelid.

The two men first met in the ring when they contested the vacant IBF middleweight title at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C., in May 1993.

Jones won a unanimous decision and then went on to add titles at super-middleweight, light-heavyweight and heavyweight.

Hopkins captured the middleweight belt in 1995 by stopping Ecuador's Segundo Mercado and made a record 20 successful defenses of that crown until losing two close decisions to fellow American Jermain Taylor in 2005.

After Saturday's bout, Hopkins claimed an interest in emulating Jones and challenging for a heavyweight title.

"People will think the punch in the back of my head made me a little crazy, but I want David Haye," he said, referring to the British heavyweight who successfully defended his WBA crown against John Ruiz on Saturday.

Jones was less certain about his plans.

"I'll go back and talk to my coaches and my dad and if we think I still have it, we'll keep going, and if not, we'll call it a day," he said.

Hopkins is 45 while Roy Jones Jr is 41. They first met in the boxing ring 17 years ago. During that time, their career is peaking.

The Rivals II will be at Mandalay Bay Arena and it will be shown in HBO pay-per-view.

According to nydailynews.com, The first fight between the two in 1993 was a stinker. Jones won a 12-round unanimous decision to win the vacant IBF middleweight title. Both have said that this fight will be much different, much better because of the heat that has built up over the 17 years.

Jones has guaranteed a knockout, primarily as a selling point for the promotion. But what happens if Hopkins knocks out Jones?

"If he can hurt me then after this one maybe it's time to hang it up," Jones said.

They are a combined 86 years of age and have 116 pro fights between them.

They both have Hall of Fame résumés, and both are Hall of Fame trash-talkers.

They met in the ring once, long ago, when both were young and hungry.

Now, 17 years later, Roy Jones Jr. and Bernard Hopkins, well past their primes, are finally realizing a rematch. They will meet in a 12-round, non-title light-heavyweight bout Saturday night at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas (HBO pay-per-view, 9 p.m. ET).

The 17-year span between fights is believed to be the second-longest in modern boxing history, behind Larry Holmes-Mike Weaver (1979 and 2000).

Jones, 41, is 5-5 in his last 10 fights, and has been knocked out three times, including a first-round TKO by Australian Danny Green in Sydney in December.

Hopkins, 45, has been far more successful after age 40, having won four of his last five fights, including wins against champions and former champions such as Antonio Tarver, Kelly Pavlik and Winky Wright. His only loss, a split decision, was to now-retired undefeated super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe.

Hopkins credits his success to a strict diet and workout regimen supervised by noted personal trainer Mackie Shilstone, who has also worked with Jones.

"It's all about the person's style, lifestyle, the way he takes care of himself, and last but not least, genetics," Hopkins says. "I always come in shape."

Hopkins likes to say he does things his own way, not the way most others do it.

Thus he will have a friend, New York children's apparel magnate and part owner of the New Jersey Nets, Artie Rabin, sing Frank Sinatra's My Way as Hopkins enters the ring Saturday. Rabin will have help from Elvis Presley's old backup singers, the Sweet Inspirations.

Mayweather fight possible, says Roach

MANILA, Philippines—Freddie Roach, the American trainer who guided Manny Pacquiao’s ascent to boxing’s pantheon, believes that his now-iconic ward may yet step into the ring against undefeated superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Roach said that a compromise could be reached by both squads regarding drug-testing protocols and that compromise could include Pacquiao dropping his libel suit against Team Mayweather.

“I’m sure there’s going to be a tradeoff between Manny dropping the lawsuit and (Mayweather) dropping the (demand for Olympic-style) drug test,” Roach told ESPN’s Jim Rome.

The bout between boxing’s biggest names was shelved when Mayweather demanded strict blood testing. He alleged that Pacquiao cut through weight lines with the help of performance-enhancing drugs to make history.

That allegation is also the heart of Pacquiao’s lawsuit against the Mayweathers.

But Roach feels that the fight, which could fetch both fighters at least $40 million each in guaranteed purses and pay-per-view shares, is still going to get made, especially if Mayweather survives his testy May 1 bout against fellow American Shane Mosley.

Manny Pacquiao – Boxing’s reigning pound for pound king and Fighter of the Decade Manny Pacquiao has stated that he is considering retirement in the wake of his successful defense of his WBO Welterweight title against Ghana’s Joshua Clottey.

Pacquiao hinted that his last bout, a 12-round shut-out of the boxer known as the “Grandmaster”, may have been the last time his fans see him in a boxing ring. It was something he talked about when he returned to the Philippines early Monday, to yet another hero’s welcome given by his adoring countrymen.

A major factor in his leaning towards hanging up his gloves for good is his candidacy for a Congressional seat to represent the province of Sarangani in the Philippine House of Representatives. The Philippine elections will be held on May 10, and Pacquiao is expected to have an uphill battle against his opponent, who is from a wealthy family that has ruled the province for decades.

Yet another probable factor is the request of his mother, Dionisia Pacquiao that her son retires from the sport before he incurs any significant physical damage. It is not the first time that Manny has been requested by his mother to quit boxing, and has said that if need be she will even go on her knees to implore her son to give in. Pacquiao has said that he will have to talk it over with the rest of his family as he does not want to see his mother go to such lengths.

Why Pacquiao - Mayweather Is Important for Boxing

After watching Manny Pacquiao utterly dominate Joshua Clottey last Saturday, the sports world has turned it's attention to the future for the Filipino sensation. Now that I've digested Pacquiao's performance - which more closely resembled a Class B Felony than a boxing match - I'm now convinced, more than ever, that he and Floyd Mayweather must enter the ring together sometime this fall. It just has to happen.

Right now, Mayweather is busy preparing for his May 1 bout with "Sugar" Shane Mosley, but he is never above discussing Pacquiao. If Mayweather bests Mosley - as virtually everyone agrees he will - the only fight of any magnitude left for either man is one that includes the other. Pacquiao and his trainer Freddie Roach clearly want that fight, the sports world wants that fight and most importantly, boxing needs that fight.

Boxing currently lacks a wealth of marketable stars. A huge pay-per-view featuring its two biggest names and including an undercard stacked with a litany of young stars could expose the public to the best the sport has to offer. Plus, the matchup of "Money May" and "Pacman" is too irresistible not to happen.

The styles of the two fighters mesh perfectly. Mayweather has often been criticized for his tendency to run away and rely too much on his defensive ability and natural skill to out-point his opponents in decisions. Pacquiao on the other hand loves to fight. He takes the fight to his opponents and loves to brawl on the inside and push for knockouts. Pacquiao would force Mayweather to fight with him. He's fast enough that Floyd wouldn't be able to run away. On the other hand, Mayweather's incredible counter-punching ability would surely be the perfect antidote to Pacman's attacking style. It's almost too perfect.

Manila : World boxing icon Manny Pacquiao will return to Manila on Monday as an undisputed hero, a strong political endorser, and a larger than life figure with millions of fans and funds, but politicians and analysts have sized him up as a "David" facing "Goliath" in his bid for a congressional seat in Sarangani province in southern Philippines.

"I will not join Manny‘s victory motorcade when he arrives in Manila. The public should honour their hero at centre stage. That day is his, and his fans," said presidential candidate Manny Villar, called lucky by envious opponents, for having a popular endorser like Pacquiao.

Villar's restrained statement came after the Commission on Elections warned politicians against unduly capitalising on Pacquiao's popularity and their relationship with him, for electioneering purposes.

"He can join us in all other sorties nationwide," Villar, said when asked if he will have a very hectic schedule with Pacquiao.

"I will not insist on campaigning with Manny in Sarangani. For me, I'll follow what he wants. As his friend, I am happy that he wants to help me. I appreciate that," explained Villar.

Pacquiao's arrival on Monday will be four days before the start of the campaign period for local positions on March 26.

As a candidate seeking a seat at the House of Representatives, Pacquiao need not campaign nationwide.

He is the only boxer who has won seven titles in different divisions, to the pride of Filipinos and other fans worldwide.

The next opponent is himself when he decides to move from the boxing ring to the wild world of politics. Although he is sincere when he said he's running for office to help the poor because of his humble beginnings, he has been criticised for his lack of education and wit, and ridiculed for his a strong regional accent.

Manny will give Floyd lots of trouble, says Clottey

LOS ANGELES – After tasting Manny Pacquiao’s fists of fury over the weekend before a mammoth crowd in Dallas, Joshua Clottey didn’t mince words in saying that the Filipino could give Floyd Mayweather the same harsh treatment in the event they agree to face each other sometime this year.

“Manny Pacquiao will give Floyd Mayweather a lot of trouble,” said Clottey. “I am giving him a very good chance (of beating Mayweather).”

Clottey found out how evasive and fast and heavy-handed Pacquiao was at Cowboys Stadium as he opted to just cover up instead of engaging the Filipino fireball in heated exchanges for fear that he might trek the path that the likes of Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto.

While talks have yet to be revived for a Mayweather-Pacquiao bout considering that Mayweather has to clear a major stumbling block on May 1 against Shane Mosley, Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum is not closing the door on the possibility of meeting up with Mayweather's representatives.

Arum, however, insists that for the megabuck matchup to finally come to fruition, Mayweather has to drop his silly demands for Olympic-style drug testing.

Before Clottey was made to substitute for Mayweather, the camps of Pacquiao and Mayweather had agreed on major points of the contract but Mayweather suddenly came out with a demand that sent the negotiations to the sewer.

Pacquiao, meanwhile, has openly stated that he is aching to get his hands on the brash Mayweather although the identity of his next opponent would only begin to take shape after the Mayweather-Mosley bout.

If Mosley upsets Mayweather, Pacquiao might even be tempted to meet Mosley, who is a live underdog despite his age (38-years old) and ring inactivity.

Mosley hasn't fought since stopping Antonio Margarito in January 2009.

Self proclaimed pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr., 33, watched on as Manny Pacquiao blasted his outmatch opponent from the opening bell, Mayweather however maintains that he was not impressed with the performance and claims that despite losing, Joshua Clottey ‘exposed’ the Filipino superstar.

“Personally, I think Pacquiao got exposed in that fight for being one-dimensional. You can have all [the] offence ability in the world but with no defense you’re not going to last long against a good counter puncher such as myself. Look at the way Clottey was getting through, each time he threw something it landed. Then at the end Pacquiao’s was all busted up, when’s the last time you’ve seen my face all messed up like that? That’s the difference between an amateur and a true pound for pound boxer.”

“I think Pacquiao gave the fans a boring fight, he was punching his arms for all 12 rounds. At least when you watch Floyd Mayweather you know you’ll be seeing non-stop action for 30 minutes straight and that’s what you’ll see on May 1st . “

While 51,000 people were in attendance in the Texas stadium, Mayweather claims this number is abysmal compared to the attendance number he would have set.

“The attendance numbers ain’t nothing compared to what I have drawn in the past or what I would have drawn if that was me in the ring that night, everybody knows that. Half those seats were empty in the back and people say Pacquiao is a draw? Let’s not forget who generated a revenue of 2.5 million dollars in one fight alone. The only reason why he's popular is because he's an ethnic minorty and from the Philippines so it's something special. If he was from Africa he would be just another boxer.”

Initially the boxing mega fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao seemed a go for March 13th until the Mayweather camp insisted of Olympic-style drug testing which Pacquiao was not willing to undergo.

Pacquiao fight hikes power use by 100 MW

AN ALREADY struggling power sector in the country had to contend with an expected increase of 100 megawatts (MW) with the match between Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey, Sunday.

Data from the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) systems operations group showed a 100 MW spike in power demand every time Pacquiao, the Filipino boxing icons, goes up the ring.

A television set can consume power from 130-380 megawatts depending on the model. Add to that the malls, movie houses and other commercial establishments that are also expected to open for business at a much earlier time to accommodate customers who want to watch the fight live via satellite on big screens.

Power demand on a regular Sunday is between 800 MW to 900 MW, thus it was expected that Sunday's demand was between 900 MW to 1,000 MW.

Despite the 100 MW increase, a "Pacquiao Sunday" demand is just equivalent to a regular day's off peak demand.

Manny Pacquiao won via a unanimous decision against Joshua Clottey. Judges score 120-108, 119-109, 119-109. It's a one sided fight. Pacquiao throws a lot of punches. Manny landed 246 of 1231 punches thrown, Clottey landed 108 of 399.

Clottey has his chances but Pacquiao is too much. One judge score 11-1 and the other two scores 12-0.

And the emperor of Dallas felt like he had just lost the Super Bowl.

"I wanted that fight here with those two fighters worse than my next breath," Jerry Jones said.

The fight, of course, was Mayweather against Manny Pacquiao, and it fell apart despite the frenzied efforts of some of the biggest names in boxing and one of the biggest egos in Texas. If not for a nasty dispute over blood testing, it might have filled Cowboy Stadium and given Jones the kind of megafight he believes his new $1.2 billion edifice rightfully deserves.

Instead, he had to settle for the hottest fighter in the game. He got Pacquiao, but even a salesman like Jones can't fool anyone into believing Joshua Clottey is Mayweather.

So he's selling Pacman. He's selling the event which, appropriately enough, is titled "The Event."

Mostly, he's selling his stadium.

"This is going to be big time," Jones said. "I'm going to over-deliver."

That should make the 45,000 fans expected to show up Saturday night happy, and it will certainly please de facto boxing boss Ross Greenburg and promoter Bob Arum. They couldn't put together the fight that everyone wanted, but, between the show in Dallas and the May 1 show featuring Mayweather against Shane Mosley in Las Vegas, they've rebounded to produce a decent substitute.

They've also gotten a new ally for the sport in Jones, who is already better at selling fights than he is at picking wide receivers.

"The thing that's blown me away is what an unbelievable promoter this guy is," Arum said. "He never gets tired. We took a two-day trip to Mexico and he was able to drink everybody under the table and kept going. He gave dozens and dozens of interviews to Mexican media outlets. It's really something to see."

Freddie Roach, who has a penchant for proving pinpoint accurate in his predictions, said Pacquiao’s victory will come by knockout in his defence of the World Boxing Organisation 147lb belt.

Eerily accurate with his visions of how Pacquiao’s last three fights – against Oscar de la Hoya, Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto – would unfold, Roach originally predicted a ninth-round knockout of Clottey, but is that confident that “perfect preparation” could result in a sixth- or seventh-round knockout.

That goes against conventional wisdom. Clottey, with 35 wins from 39 contests, has never been knocked out in his three defeats (one draw) to date with two of those on points, and one by disqualification.

Pacquiao, 50-3-2, with 38 knockouts, remains the only boxer ever to notch up world titles in seven weight divisions. “Manny is in the best shape of his life, and looked very, very sharp in our final sessions. I’ve never seen him sharper,” said Roach, trainer of the year in the United States for the last three years, who turned 50 this week.

Biggest entourage ever flies to Dallas in style

DALLAS—From a convoy of vehicles to a customized luxury bus. This time, a chartered jet flies the world’s top boxer.

Pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao and his mammoth entourage arrived here in style from Los Angeles late Monday on a 170-seater Boeing 737, emblazoned with fighting images of the Filipino superstar.

After the two-hour, 20-minute trip, the seven-time world champion in as many weight divisions still had time to reflect on his World Boxing Organization welterweight title defense against Ghanaian challenger Joshua Clottey this Saturday (Sunday in Manila) at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

“I’ll put up a great show for fight fans,” said Pacquiao, who won his two battles—against Marco Antonio Barrera in 2003 and Jorge Solis in 2007—in this huge state, which prides itself with the slogan “Everything is Bigger in Texas.”

After a photo shoot with the media at a private airport near Dallas, Manny’s wife Jinkee and the rest of the 141-strong Team Pacquiao, motored to the opulent Gaylord Texan Hotel in three buses and two Lincoln Navigators.

The entourage was treated to a catered dinner of chicken adobo, beef steak, bulalo, fried boneless milkfish, sweet and sour pork, cassava, peach cakes and fruits.

Fight promoter Top Rank earlier gave the group big a sendoff at the Atlantic airport in Los Angeles. An all-girls cheering squad and a four-man band performed for Pacquiao as he walked the red carpet toward the waiting plane.

In his previous fights, Pacquiao left Los Angeles in a convoy of vehicles. Top Rank boss Bob Arum later hired a luxury bus that had the Filipino ring icon’s image all over it.

This time, Top Rank wrote a check for $100,000 (about P4.6 million) for the chartered flight on a modified 737 aircraft dubbed “Air Pacquiao.” The plane is similar to the ones used by the likes of the Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers, and other professional teams.

After an early-morning run, Pacquiao is slated to hold his media workout Tuesday afternoon at a makeshift ring in the basement of the 1,511-room hotel.

Clottey arrived Monday from New York on a commercial flight.

Pacquiao’s entourage was the biggest thus far since he started campaigning in the United States in 2001.

It is 7:13 a.m. in Los Angeles and Manny Pacquiao, the world's best pound-for-pound boxer, is jogging on a public high school track. There are palm trees in the distance, and the low hum of traffic on I-10 is starting to turn into a low roar as the Filipino boxer, clad in a red tracksuit, dashes around the dirt oval despite a painful shin splint. A handful of early-arriving students hang on the chain-link fence surrounding the track and watch him do his work. The Pac-Man is preparing for his March 13 fight against Joshua Clottey, a dangerous but relatively unknown welterweight from Ghana. The $49.95 pay-per-view fight is billed as "The Event" but could easily be called "The Letdown."

Just three months ago, boxing was preparing for its version of the Super Bowl. Fresh from his mega-fight win over Miguel Cotto, Pacquiao had begun negotiations with Floyd Mayweather Jr., a brash welterweight whom non-sports fans know best from his appearance on Dancing with the Stars. The proposed battle was being compared to some of the greatest matchups in boxing history. Even people who had given up on boxing or hadn't really thought about it much were talking about the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight, which would probably earn each boxer $40 million, the most lucrative match ever.

The Filipino superstar will be at a size disadvantage when taking on the African welterweight Saturday, but he’s trained rigorously for the challenge.

It's not the fight most wanted to see, and many casual sports fans probably don't know much about this guy who's stepped into Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s void to fight Manny Pacquiao.

Understandable. So much about why that mega-bout crashed over a drug-testing dispute, with $25-million guarantees to each fighter, is head-scratching.

Time, then, to bring some simple reasoning to the sport now as fight week arrives for Pacquiao vs. Joshua Clottey on Saturday night at Dallas Cowboys Stadium.

The soundest logic says the man considered the best boxer in the world will have his way against the African challenger.

Any reason to think differently? A letdown? A visit to Pacquiao's Hollywood gym brings an onslaught of rebuttals from those asked if the Filipino superstar has shown any sign he's blowing off the threat of this lesser-known opponent.

"I wish we were fighting Mayweather this time the way Manny has worked," Pacquiao's conditioning trainer Alex Ariza said.

A gym regular said he saw Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KOs) unleash a barrage of two-dozen unanswered blows to respected veteran sparring partner Steve Forbes.

"I hear Vegas has the over/under for rounds at 10," said Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach, who's been so sharp in projecting his prodigy's latest conquests of Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto. "I'll take the under. We've watched a lot of tapes on Clottey. He's predictable. Manny will be the first to stop him."

The 32-year-old Clottey, a native of Ghana and current resident of the Bronx, is 35-3 with 21 knockouts, and his lone losses have come to world champions: Carlos Baldomir in 1999 (controversial disqualification), Antonio Margarito in 2006 (close decision), and Miguel Cotto (close decision) in in June, his most recent bout.

Pacquiao watched Cotto-Clottey from ringside, scouting Cotto at the time before beating him by 12th-round TKO in November. In Clottey, Pacquiao will be fighting a second-straight true welterweight who has victories over the accomplished Zab Judah (a world title fight) and the late Diego Corrales on his resume. Clottey performed strongly against Cotto, but oddly stopped asserting himself in the final rounds.

"Clottey, he's a good defensive fighter," Pacquiao said. "He's bigger than me [by 2 ½ inches, with a three-inch reach advantage], so I've had to study his style and maybe he's trying to learn some new techniques. But from what I've studied so far, I think he's a good formula for me. I'm still sure he's studying different techniques he can try against me."

And how's that going?

"It is not easy. [Pacquiao's] good, but I tell people I'm going to beat him," Clottey said. "They don't believe me, but I'm a confident guy and I will keep my word. I will make him think a lot in the ring because of my defense. … I believe in my defense. He's going to throw a lot of punches. I'll block nine out of 10."

Clottey has been groomed in his country by impressive natives, including the tough Ike Quartey. Like Pacquiao, he came from a poor family and hawked goods on the street, including fish, oranges and bananas.

So is Clottey bound to frequently go into a self-made shell, stalling like he did late against Cotto? Clottey says he won't, wanting Pacquiao to stay cautious of the size advantage and punching power that is considered by some to be suspect. Clottey's last true knockout was in 2004, at a club show in Laughlin, Nev.

"What about mine?" Clottey asked of his punches.

Roach has openly said, "We don't know what Clottey has. We're concerned with his uppercut and hook, but we'll keep Manny out of that pocket."

Pacquiao, guaranteed $12 million plus a pay-per-view cut for this fight, has some bigger days ahead of him this year, including the election he's seeking for a congressional seat in the Philippines, along with the expected resumption of talks with Mayweather.

Clottey, meanwhile, wants to keep logic thrown out the window. He never expected to get this fight, was negotiating for a bout against 154-pound champ Yuri Foreman when notified Mayweather was out and he was in.

"I'd like to think good things come to good people," Clottey said. "We'll see. I know he's a good fighter. If he hits me, and I don't feel his punches, I'll jump on him. If I do feel them, I'll just have to hit him more."

But their prayers went unanswered, because come March 13 the world of boxing has decided that there would be "THE (Third-World-War) EVENT" between Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey: two boxers coming from the Third-World countries.

It's amazing how these two third-world boxers have the power, charisma and privilege to fight in the first-world country and get the interest of the whole world of every class to watch them fight and be entertained and might be shocked.

Yes, because these fighters come from third-world countries, but they are undoubtedly the two first-world-class boxers who are capable to do the unthinkable.

Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey were both born in poor families. They were not born boxers; they were only born to survive and boxing showed them the way how to survive and they surely survived so well.

At first they were just fighting against hunger and poverty, but now they are going to fight against each other: the two great survivors of poverty.

They both entered the painful world of boxing just to support their humble families, but now the whole wold support them and pay them more than many other jobs can offer.

Clottey and Pacquiao are already both winners in this fight. They have already won their living and now they are only fighting to entertain the world of boxing and to establish better their future and their legacy.

Pacquiao is giving Clottey another chance to prove to the world that he won his fight against Cotto, as many boxing experts also believe.

It is Clottey's time to show to the people that if Manny had an easy win against Cotto, against him it would not be that easy.

And most of all, Clottey has now the privilege to shock the world and discover that he is better than what boxing experts think.

Some people think that Manny Pacquiao is just uselessly risking his legacy in fighting Joshua Clottey. Pacquiao has everything to lose and Clottey has nothing to lose and everything to gain with this fight. They may be right, but that where exactly lies the greatness of Pacquiao.

Manny always wants challenge and there is no greater challenge than when you risk everything only to gain something. Pacquiao is not only fighting for his personal interests, but also for the interests of others.

He knows that fighting Clottey, a bigger, taller, stronger, and tougher guy would create a great spectacle in the boxing world which is dying because some boxers use boxing only to make money and choose only the opponents whom they can 101 percent beat.

Clottey has all the physical advantages to Pacquiao, and yet this doesn't frighten Manny, but challenges him to use all his skills to overcome his disadvantages.

Clottey is great with his defence and Manny is great with his offense. But is Clottey's defence good enough to stop the offense of Manny?

No one wins just by defence and everyone wins by offense. In boxing, the offense is your sword to kill your opponent and your defence is your shield to protect yourself from being killed by the sword/offense of your opponent.

Take away the sword/offense and you can never kill your opponent with your shield/defence. Take away the shield/defence and you can still kill your opponent with your sword/offense.

Therefore in boxing the offense is more important than the defence. The offense is the STAR in boxing and the defence is just the BODYGUARD of the STAR.

Now who is more important: the star or the bodyguard? That's why in boxing what they count for is your offense and not your defense.

I don't really care who wins the fight, but what I do care is that both boxers would give us the greatest fight. I can no longer wait to experience this Third-World-War between the First-World-Class boxers.

May the best boxer win and may they help the boxing world keep breathing. As long as there are still boxers who are willing to fight, no matter what, no matter how much, no matter who, no matter how, the boxing world would never die.

Boxing is already in our blood. We are all born fighters, but we just have different opponents to fight against in this life and the world is our ring. While we are still in this ring, we just can't do nothing but fight and fight well until the end.

Those who do not understand the gravity of the alleged actions taken by one Kelly Swanson, publicists of Golden Boy Promotions, against Philippine personnel and fans during the press conference of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Shane Mosley in LA are either simply shortsighted or insensitive simply because the issue does not affect them.

Leave it to Top Rank head honcho Bob Arum to put things in perspective.

In an exclusive interview I did with Arum this morning regarding the issues I just brought up, Arum flat out blasted the actions against Philippine media men and asked for the banishment of whoever is responsible for instituting the said rules.

Whether Swanson was acting on her own discretion or had orders from Team Mayweather is unclear but what is however is that a line has been crossed.

Whatever happened to freedom of speech? And the fact that Floyd Mayweather Jr. brought this issue upon himself together with Golden Boy Promotions with their insinuations and constant mentions implicating Manny Pacquiao and the country of the Philippines with performance enhancing drugs and cheating, how come astute members of Philippine media who are seasoned professionals in their craft, have to be filtered and excluded in any form of way in their search for the truth? It’s still 10 days before Filipino World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao puts his 147-pound crown on the blocks but chief trainer Freddie Roach declared that the game plan to beat Ghanaian challenger Joshua Clottey has already been in place.

“Yes, we’re ready. The way Manny is responding to his training, I can tell this early that he’s going to overwhelm him (Clottey), “Roach boldly predicted during last weekend’s media conference call held at the Wild Card Gym in downtown Los Angeles.

“With Manny’s speed and his combinations, I do believe he will be the first person to stop Clottey before the 12th round,” the four-time ‘Trainer of the Year’ awardee of the American Writers Association assured.
“I know Clottey is a big strong guy and a great fighter and we respect him as a real tough guy, but we also know his characteristic, we know his mistakes and we know his bad habits, which we can exploit to the hilt,” he said.

The Filipino ring icon and the Puerto Rican hero face each other off for 12 rounds titled ‘The Event’ March 14 (Manila time) at the newly built million dollar Dallas Cowboys in Arlington, Texas.

After almost four weeks at the gym since arriving in Los Angeles from Manila, Roach said the ‘Pacman’ has kept on improving day after day and that he wouldn’t stop in trying to get better. Following an 11-round sparring Friday last week against four sparring partners, Roach said he wanted to give the champ a rest day the next day, but Pacquiao refused his offer and instead boxed for 12 more rounds that day.

Roach told members of the international media, some of whom fielded their questions via phone patch from their respective countries, that Team Pacquiao have been watching a lot of tapes on Clottey fights from where the training staff learned about the challengers’ weaknesses.

This week, the team’s last at Wild Card before driving to Dallas Monday next week, will be a tapering off period in order to maintain Pacquiao’s peak condition.
Pacquiao himself, who was with Roach during the media conference call along with Top Rank bossman Bob Arum, declared himself in tip-top shape.

“I am, good. Training camp is good and everything is going great,” he quipped. I know Clottey is taller and bigger than me. I know I can’t underestimate him because he’s also a former champion. “

Asked about Leonard de Jesus, who was once one of Pacquiao’s corner men but who will be at Clottey’s corner, Roach said he couldn’t care less.

“Lenny used to work as cut man for Manny. He knows us pretty well, but we have changed a lot since then. If he thinks he’s going to face the old Manny Pacquiao, that’s not going to be the case,” Roach remarked. “I respect him though. He’s a good boxing guy.”

“Am I a better trainer?” he asked. “I don’t know. All I know is we have a better fighter (in Pacquiao). We have a perfect game plan and I don’t care who trains Joshua Clottey for this fight, he can’t beat us.”

“Let’s face it. Clottey is what he is. He fights the same way in every tape I watched, “ he said by way of assessing the challenger. “Whether he fights southpaw or right-handers, he is predictable. He’s good at he does, but he does the same thing over and over again.”

“He’s going to try to change for this fight, but once he gets in he will revert back to it,” Roach continued. “We are 100 percent ready to his style. He is resilient. The beginning of the fight is going to be very hard because he is a very good opponent and he likes to fight. We will break him down and I am confident the firth will not go 12 rounds.”

But it's evident Floyd Mayweather Jr. still gets as much attention as the Pac Man's upcoming opponent, especially when trainer Freddie Roach is involved.

"We are not happy with his remarks," Roach said during a conference call, referring to Mayweather's inference that Pacquiao has been using steroids and other performance enhancing drugs. "Manny wants to fight him in the future.

"Sometimes when Manny is shadowboxing he will show me how Mayweather fights and how he will take care of the problem. I've never seen him do that before. [Mayweather] was trying to ruin our reputation with those allegations and we do want to fight him and we do want to knock him out."

Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KOs) is the solid favorite to keep Mayweather in his future by getting past Clottey (35-3, 21 KOs). HBO will show it on a pay-per-view basis.

He's been peppering the speed bag, pounding the heavy bag and doing enough running to make Usain Bolt fall over in a heap. Under the watchful eye of trainer Freddie Roach, Pacquiao is putting himself in position to knock out Joshua Clottey when they fight March 13 in Dallas.

"Manny is getting better all the time," Roach marveled after a training session Friday at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles. "I know Clottey is a big, strong guy. I respect him, he's a great fighter. But Manny I feel is going to overwhelm him with his speed and combinations, and I do believe we will be the first one to stop him in 12 rounds."

If it sounds simple, that's because Pacquiao has little trouble when fights are decided in the ring. Things aren't so easy when the fight is contested with words.

That continues to be the case with Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr., after their proposed blockbuster fell through because of drug testing protocol. Mayweather and his relatives have accused Pacquiao of using performance-enhancing drugs, either directly or by innuendo, while the Filipino champion has balked at taking a blood test within 14 days of a fight.

Pacquiao will instead fight Clottey at Cowboys Stadium, while Mayweather is headed for a showdown May 1 against welterweight champion Shane Mosley. Along with the verbal jabs, Pacquiao and Mayweather can also fight over who generates bigger pay-per-view numbers.

"We're not happy with his remarks and Manny really wants to fight him in the future because of the remarks he made," Roach said. "Manny, sometimes when he's shadowboxing, he shows me how Mayweather fights and how he'll take care of the problem, and I've never seen that before.

"He's trying to ruin our reputations and so forth," Roach added, "but we want to fight him and we'll knock him out."

Promoter Bob Arum still believes that Mayweather never wanted to fight Pacquiao, and his strict adherence to blood testing - which is far more extensive than urine analysis required by the Nevada Athletic Commission -- was his way of getting out of it.

"We don't have to be geniuses to know what they were trying to do. They were trying to get into Manny's head so he'd be discombobulated," Arum said. "Mayweather against Manny is a no-contest, no contest. Manny would wipe the ring with Floyd Mayweather."

If that's ever to happen, he'll first have to wipe the ring with Clottey.

The fight appears to be a mismatch on paper, especially considering the rugged fighter from Ghana lost to Miguel Cotto -- the same guy Pacquiao dominated last fall. But just like fights aren't decided with words, they aren't decided on paper, either.

"Joshua Clottey I know is taller and bigger than me, and you cannot underestimate him," Pacquiao said, "because he's a former world champion also."

Clottey has been training in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for the first seven-figure payday of his career. It would go a long way toward helping his family back home in the dusty city of Accra, where Clottey acknowledges that poverty is a way of life.

"I'm coming to do my best," he said by phone earlier this week. "He is a good fighter. He is the best now. This is the test and I am going for the WBO title. I'm going all out. I have my game plan and I always come to fight."

It's a difficult fight to market because it's not the fight demanded by the public, but that doesn't mean there isn't significant interest. Pacquiao is making an encore appearance on Jimmy Kimmel next week and will soon have a profile in Time Magazine, while Clottey was the subject of a lengthy expose in ESPN The Magazine.

And of course, Pacquiao is running for Congress in the Philippines.

More than 30,000 tickets have already been sold for the fight, and Arum expects the $1.2 billion football stadium just outside Dallas to be filled with about 45,000 fans on March 13.

It may not be Mayweather, but it's something to tide fans over.

"People were looking forward to a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight, that's clear. But Manny has a huge, huge fan base," Arum said. "Every sports fan knows Manny Pacquiao. Our job is to present Joshua Clottey as he is, a bigger guy, a stronger guy probably, a guy who has never been off his feet -- a real test for Manny Pacquiao. That's what will sell this fight.

"I think the public gets it, and I think the pay-per-view is going to do extremely well."

The Filipino boxer might be headed for his last bout because of other interests, including politics, and a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. just might never happen.

Manny Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach, delivered this knee-buckling assessment for boxing fans already distraught by the failed Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather Jr. negotiations.

"This could be our last fight," Roach said last week, as Pacquiao heads into the final days of training for his March 13 welterweight world title bout against Joshua Clottey at Cowboys Stadium outside Dallas.

Roach's sobering speculation about boxing's biggest star is based on a chain of events that could occur.

Pacquiao, 31, is running for a congressional seat in his native Philippines. If elected in May, he'll represent a community of about 400,000 people in need of improved healthcare, education and employment that the boxer himself was deprived of while being raised in poverty.

"I can see the help people need because I've been in that place," Pacquiao said. "They're poor, suffering, and needing help from the government. I know what they feel."

His public-service duties will be tremendous, the boxer and his closest advisors know, and his election is more realistic than it was when he failed to win a national seat a few years ago.

Pacquiao, recently selected fighter of the decade, has won 11 consecutive fights against the likes of Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto and Juan Manuel Marquez.

If he beats Clottey as expected, and if Mayweather defeats Shane Mosley on May 1, negotiations for a Pacquiao-Mayweather bout are likely to resume.

"I've talked to Manny about this. And if Mayweather doesn't come back to the table in a mood to negotiate, the public demand won't be there for any other fight," Roach said. "So if Manny wins the election and likes politics, this [Clottey fight] could be it. And I have no problem with that. I don't want Manny to be one of those guys who stays too long. It's better to go out on top.

"That's my goal for him, and I've told him, 'Don't do it like everyone else in the world.' "

Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 knockouts) has fought only six fewer bouts than Muhammad Ali, and has boxed the same number of rounds (305) that "Sugar" Ray Leonard had when he retired.

Roach also serves as a reminder of the perils of an overextended boxing career, as he battles the effects of pugilistic Parkinson's syndrome.

Before a recent workout at Roach's Wild Card gym in Hollywood, Pacquiao expressed enthusiasm to fight Mayweather but noted the uncertainty over his future.

"It's hard to say. Is this my last fight? We'll see," Pacquiao said. "One never knows. It's still so early to be talking about this, but I do like the thought of going out on top.

"We did a lot in boxing, achieved a lot -- more than what we set out to do."

Pacquiao's promoter, Bob Arum, said he was "inclined to doubt" that his star fighter would walk away from the sport.

VAZQUEZ KOs SONSONA IN 4TH

Undefeated Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr. of Puerto Rico captured the vacant WBO junior featherweight title by knocking out Marvin Sonsona of the Philippines in the 4th round at the Coleseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico moments ago.

Vazquez fought a measured fight throwing well-timed power shots to the body of Sonsona and with a left hook to the liver finally sending Sonsona down and out to the canvas at 1:06 in the 4th round.

Sonsona took the first round by fighting from the distance but in the second round Vazquez started landing his power shots and cut Sonsona under the left eye with a right. From that point on Vazquez put on the pressure as Sonsona kept on backing up until Vazquez caught him with a barrage of punches.

Vazquez captured his first title and upped his record to 18-0-1 with 15 knockouts while Sonsona suffered his first defeat and went down to 14-1-1 with 12 knockouts.

RODEL MAYOL VS NINO ROMERO ENDS IN TECHNICAL DRAW

The Rodel Mayol vs Omar Nino Romero fight was declared a technical draw after the bout ended in the 3rd round in a controversial fashion at the Coliseo Olimpico in Guadalajara, Mexico late Saturday night (Sunday morning in Manila).
Before the end came, Romero hit Mayol with a series of low blows the last one landed squarely on Mayol crouch that backed Mayol up. Referee Vic Drakulich came in to stop the action when Romero unleashed a wicked left that hit squarely at the jaw of the momentarily defenseless Mayol who crashed to the canvas almost unconscious. While Mayol was being prepared to be carried by a stretcher and while the Romero camp celebrates, ring officials headed by WBC Vice President Mauricio Sulaiman deliberated the situation which resulted in a technical draw decision allowing Mayol to retain his light flyweight title.

After a feeling out first round, Mayol unleashed a barrage of powerful uppercuts on Romero in the second round that wobbled Romero but Romero's chin held up to survive the round. Mayol came in strong in the third round until a series of low blows by Romero veered the fight to its sudden end.

As a precaution, Mayol was brought to the Military Regional Hospital in Gualajara and was thoroughly checked.

"He's okay now," Dr Ed de la Vega who acted as Mayol's cutman informed. "Although he was hit hard on the jaw, there was no fracture in his jaw and his neck is fine. We are about to get back to our hotel from the hospital."

It was unclear if the WBC would or could order a rematch as there was no rematch clause in the contract.

Mayol's record now stands at 26-4-2 with 20 knockouts while Romero dips to 28-3-2 with 11 knockouts.

“Fighter of the Decade” Manny Pacquiao eased up in his training grind on Wednesday as he returned to the track at the LA High School.

After a hard workout in the morning trainer Freddie Roach asked him to ease up and have a light workout in the Wild Card Gym in preparation for what conditioning expert Alex Ariza said “will be a long sparring session tomorrow (Thursday in LA.)"

Ariza told us that “everything is going really well” and that Wednesday was the first day that Pacquiao “went to the track after the leg injury last weekend and he looks a hundred percent.”

Ariza said that since Pacquiao had a hard day on Tuesday when he sparred ten rounds and then a hard workout on the track, trainer Freddie Roach “talked to him to having a light workout and preparing for a tough sparring session on Thursday” although there was no definite word on who his sparring partners would be.

Last Tuesday Pacquiao went five rounds with undefeated Ghana welterweight Abdulla Amidu (18-0, 17 KO’s) and pushed Roach to allow him to follow up with five rounds against Stevie Forbes.

The conditioning expert who, working alongside Roach has turned Pacquiao into a devastating fighting machine said Pacquiao was “feeling good. Manny is the type that just when his legs feel better he wants to see how far he can push it so we are trying to keep him from doing that.”

But while there are rave reviews about Pacquiao’s preparation coming out of the Wild Card Gym, award-winning photographer Chris Farina of Top Rank who visited the training camp of challenger Joshua Clottey was quoted by Chris Robinson of Examiner.com as saying that Clottey “looked awesome” and that he is “completely ripped and toned.” Read More

In the World's Greatest Ever Boxer website, fans worldwide were able to vote for who they thought are the sport's all-time prize fighters. Nearly 500,000 votes were cast, and voting ended in December 2009.

Wilfredo Gomez (44-3-1) was voted as the greatest ever bantamweight.

Pacquiao (50-3-2) was voted as the greatest ever featherweight.

Roberto Duran (103-16) was voted as the greatest ever lightweight.

Roy Jones, Jr (54-5) was voted as the greatest ever light heavyweight.

Muhammad Ali (56-5) was voted as the greatest ever heavyweight.

All-Time Greats ?

   Fans voted Muhammad Ali as the third greatest boxer ever. Manny Pacquiao was voted second. And Sugar Ray Robinson (173-19-6) was voted in the poll as the world's greatest boxer ever.

Most expert panels list Henry Armstrong (149-21-10) as ranked third on the all-time list. Ali, second. Robinson, first.

   Polling are inherently biased when assessing current fighters against retired fighters. First, it is more appropriate to assess a boxer throughout an entire career. A voter can only do that after the boxer retires. Therefore, the poll would have more valid results several years after Pacquiao' and Roy Jones' retirement.

That is why to be inducted into the basketball and football hall of fame, retired athletes must wait a few years in order to become eligible for induction.

Waiting a few years after retirement allow voters and panelists to sober up in order to make their professional assessments. Additionally, media coverage and hype will have become more objective with hindsight.

Finally, ideally all-time lists in any sport should be era independent. That is not possible of course. Athletes are reviewed even though they fought or played in different eras, with different game rules.

   That distorts the comparison. Additionally, athletes that played before the 1960s often enjoyed less media coverage. Thus, there tends to be less video footage of their feats which makes it harder for voting panelists to evaluate their accomplishments.

Top athletes today have much more media coverage. Their athletic performances on the field are well documented, and videos of their accomplishments proliferate on sites such as YouTube.

787 Aviation Ave. – Sugar Shane Mosley, the name in 147 lbs? I’d say “yes” by beating Margarito, yes he is the main man in the 147 lbs. division. Margarito was the most avoided 147 pounder in the planet before Shane put a beating on him in rounds 8 and 9 13 months ago.

I remember that during the post fight press conference of Pacquiao-De la Hoya, I asked Arum if Manny will fight Margarito. Arum said “we’re brave but not that brave.” So by beating Margarito, Mosley is the man in the welterweight division.

Clottey aims to slow down speedy Pacquiao

MANILA, Philippines – Joshua Clottey of Ghana seems to be unthreatened by his match-up against the only 7-division world champion and pound-for-pound king, Manny Pacquiao, on March 13 at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
“Manny Pacquiao is a human being, like everyone else. He's just a really good fighter who is out there now who is No. 1 now,” Clottey told Lem Satterfield of Fanhouse.com.
“If I win this fight against Manny Pacquiao, I will never feel like I beat the best fighter in the world,” he said. “I will feel like I had a fight with Manny Pacquiao, the best fighter out there, and I won.”
He also clarified that just in case he wins on March 13, people should not regard his victory as an upset.

Can Joshua Clottey Upset Manny Pacquiao?

You’re probably wondering how on earth can Joshua Clottey win this fight. He appears to have little chance when he faces off against Manny Pacquiao in three weeks. Not many people outside of his homeland of Ghana, West Africa think he can win.

Here’s why.

Clottey recently lost to Miguel Cotto. The same Miguel Cotto who got beat down by Pacquiao last year. I know that it’s silly to compare how two fighters fared against a common opponent but Clottey’s performance against Cotto simply does not match up well with Pacquiao’s.

Clottey also has shown a reluctance to pull the trigger in his biggest fights. Maybe it’s an issue of physical fatigue. Or maybe it’s simply mental. Whatever it is, this gun-shy nature, especially late in his two fights against Antonio Margarito and Miguel Cotto, cost him a chance at victory in both fights. If he commits the same sin against Pac Man, he may not last 12 rounds for the first time in his career.

Yes, it appears that Clottey has no chance. But looks can be deceiving.

The Case for Joshua Clottey: Physical Strength

For the first time, Manny Pacquiao will be facing off against a full-blown, welterweight. Not a blown-up Ricky Hatton coming off a knockout loss to Floyd Mayweather. Not a weight-drained Oscar De La Hoya fighting at 147 for the first time in years.

In Clottey, Pacquiao will be facing the strongest boxer in his career. Talented, yet naturally smaller boxers like Diego Corrales and Zab Judah were unable to hold up against Clottey. Will Clottey’s strength have a similar impact on the Pac Man?

The Case for Joshua Clottey: El Dinamita

In case you didn’t know, “El Dinamita” is Juan Manuel Marquez’s fighting nickname. Simply put, Clottey better be studying film of Pacquiao’s epic wars with Marquez like an undergrad cramming for Sweet Science 101: A Lesson in Counter-Punching by Juan Manuel Marquez.

Clottey is a natural counter-puncher. Watching tapes of Marquez-Pacquiao may give him the clues that he needs to pass the considerable test that is the Pac Man.

The Case for Joshua Clottey: Manny Pacquiao

Will thoughts of his political career after boxing or of a potential fight with Floyd Mayweather, Jr. later in the year cause Pacquiao to overlook Clottey? It’s not beyond the realm of possibility that the Pac Man is looking past Clottey.

He’s accomplished just about everything in his career. What does a win against Joshua Clottey mean? If what I say is true, the always-in-shape Clottey may be primed for an upset.

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. Puts His Dress Back On.

Last week Floyd Mayweather Jr. went directly to one of his appointed mouthpieces to tell the world what most of us knew a long time ago. He's scared of Manny Pacquiao and he will never, ever fight him.

In typical fashion Money May did it in a way that will most likely pacify his increasing small group of hardcore admirers but will only make the rest of us continue to call him out.
He went to his "local" Grand Rapids newspaper and gave an "interview". The fact that Money hasn't lived in Grand Rapids for years hasn't kept that Michigan fish-wrap from prostituting itself for Floyd over the years.
With the current economies for local papers, it's hard to blame them for behaving that way. But if Floyd really wanted to be interviewed by a credible source he could have gone to a number of other more discerning outlets.
Tiger's press conference wasn't this controlled.
It's pretty obvious Floyd wanted to give a statement and not be bothered with messy considerations like questions. Questions like why he is already negotiating a fight that isn't even on the schedule at this time.

The long and short of it is that PBF continues to plead his case on the past negotiations without ever admitting that Manny Pacquiao had already stated why he didn't like blood tests right before a fight. That he felt it made him weak.
How does Manny know this? Because he submitted to a test two days before his fight with Erik Morales.
How do we know this? Well, there are the many interviews Manny did after the fight including this one in 2005. Where he talks about it on video.

Which means Floyd already knows why Manny doesn't want to take the drug test. I think we can also figure out why Floyd asked for the testing after the fight had already been agreed upon back in December.
The fact is Manny had already given blood in the past. If he was on PED's and scared of blood tests why would he have done that right before the Morales fight?
But Money knows all of this. The fact is Money doesn't want to fight Pacquiao.
If we were unsure of PBF's intentions, the second half of the article pretty much confirms what a lot of us already assumed.
That part of the article is a laundry list of demands that Money says he will make in any future negotiations. All of which he knows full well will not be agreeable to the Pacqiuao camp.
This is classic Floyd. He starts making his case for why he won't fight a credible opponent years before he might have to face them.
He made excuses for years as to why he wouldn't fight Mosley. Now that Sugar Shane is 38 and has lost most of his recent fights against top contenders, he suddenly wants to fight.
The interview also confirms to me that Mayweather-Mosley will be a very boring fight that will leave most fight fans reaching for their Five Hour Energy drinks in an attempt to stay awake before it is over.
Money talks about how he's too smart for Mosley. Read between the lines and it says "Mosley's getting old, he hasn't fought in over a year and if you think I will let him come anywhere near me you're out of your mind."
Last week at the unveiling of the new HBO documentary Magic & Bird: A Courtship of Rivals , Magic Johnson ended his comments with a plea to the head of HBO sports Ross Greenburg.
"Ross Greenburg." Magic called out. "Make Mayweather-Pacquiao happen."
Unfortunately Johnson was yelling at the wrong guy. It's Mayweather not Greenburg that's gumming up the works.

Ponce De Leon Stops Cruz, Matthysse KOs Vivian Harris

At the Auditorio Plaza La Condesa in Mexico City, Mexico, Daniel Ponce De Leon (38-2, 33KOs) stopped Orlando Cruz (16-2-1, 7KOs) in the third round to pick up the vacant WBC Latino featherweight title.

Ponce De Leon would like a shot at full champion Elio Rojas next.

After two lackluster rounds of action and head clashes, Ponce De Leon brought the pain in the third when he trapped Cruz and launched a barrage of punches to send him down. Thinking better of the situation, Cruz stayed down for the full count.

In the co-feature, welterweight puncher Lucas Martin Matthysse (26-0, 24KOs) continued his streak of broken bodies with a knockout of former champion Vivian Harris (29-4-1, 19KOs) in the fourth round.

It was a war from the first round. Both guys were throwing hard shots to tests each other's beards. Matthysse proved to have the better chin as he ate Harris' big punches and kept coming with hard shots. Matthysse forgot about going to head for a little while in the third and began to batter Harris' body. That body work really got to Harris and it slowed him down. Matthysse went right back on the attack in the fourth with shots to the body and the head. He then got Harris in trouble with a right hand bomb. The ref stopped the fight because he was able to close the show. Harris' team was upset over the stoppage. Read More

Shawn Porter, the sparring partner for Manny Pacquiao leading up to his fight with Miguel Cotto, claimed the NABO Jr. Middleweight (154 lbs.) belt Friday night with a 10-round unanimous decision over journeyman Russell Jordan of Rochester, NY. The win keeps Porter’s professional record unblemished at 13-0, while Jordan drops to 15-7. Headlining ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights in front of his hometown Cleveland fans, Porter came out with obvious nervous adrenaline. Bouncing around and expending energy early on, he swung hard for a deciding punch against an opponent with a history of knockout losses. Five of Jordan’s six previous defeats ended in this manner, and Porter looked to add his name to the list. The night didn’t go exactly as planned for Porter’s corner, headed by Shawn’s trainer and father, Ken. The 5’7 Porter was tagged with a well-placed right hook in the second round by the 6’2 and very skinny Jordan. The punch caught Porter off guard and sent him staggering backwards, but he was able to recover and finish the round. Each man had his pros and cons throughout the fight: Porter bobbed all night and let his guard down frequently but was the busier fighter with more landed punches; Jordan kept Porter at a distance as he should have but couldn’t effectively time Porter’s bouncing. Roach: Opening rounds hard for Pacquiao, Clottey

MANILA, Philippines – Although boxing coach Freddie Roach is confident that Manny Pacquiao will demolish Joshua Clottey, he sees a very hard fight for both boxers.

The prized trainer said he thinks the March 13 bout between reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champ Pacquiao and challenger Clottey might even turn out just like the Miguel Cotto fight last November.

“Just like Cotto fight... the first half of the fight will be really, really hard for both guys,” Roach said in an interview with FightFan.com.

Roach, who oversees Pacquiao’s training at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles, California, acknowledges Clottey’s durability.

He, however, said the Ghanaian’s defense leaves much to be desired so he expects his Filipino ward to assert himself by the middle rounds.

“We will take over in the middle or late rounds,” said Roach.

Passive defense
Roach said he has patterned some of Pacquiao’s strategies against the Ghanaian’s “amateurish” defense.

“He's passive, he's way too passive,” he said while describing Clottey’s defensive stance. “That works in the amateurs. There's no counter punching in that defense. He waits for you to finish your combinations then he throws.”

Roach said the only way Clottey would be effective against Pacquiao is if the Ghanaian engages the Filipino into a full fight.

This means Clottey would have himself get hit before he can tag Pacquiao with power punches.

“For him to be effective, he has to hit while we're engaging also for him to land that power shot, but he seems like he doesn't do that a lot,” said the boxing coach.

Waiting for Pacquiao to get tired would only bring Clottey more trouble.

“[Because] Pacquiao… doesn't get tired,” said Roach.

Pacquiao picks Mosley to win over Mayweather

MANILA, Philippines – The world’s best pound-for-pound fighter made a prediction on the outcome of the May 1 fight between Americans Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Shane Mosley.

“I think Mosley will win,” Manny Pacquiao declared on the Krystal Hart Show as quoted by FightFan.com.

Even if he thinks that Mayweather is a "boring" fighter, Pacquiao said that the fight between "Pretty Boy Floyd" and "Sugar Shane" will still be a treat for fight fans.

“I think Mayweather vs. Mosley will be a good fight,” he said.

Pacquiao then went on to give another reason why his scheduled March 13 bout with Mayweather did not push through.

“I’m not concerned about the Money (that would have come in a fight vs. Mayweather). I’m concerned about what I can give in terms of my performance to the people who love boxing. My concern isn’t only with myself, but with the people who buy tickets looking for a good fight,” he said.

“I don’t want to disappoint people with a boring fight. I feel you need to entertain the people who watch your fights.”

Pacquiao, meanwhile, assured a very good fight against Ghana’s Joshua Clottey, whom he will face on March 13 at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

“It’s going to be a good fight because he has a good style. It’s a different kind of style and I want to fight. He’s bigger and he’s taller than Miguel Cotto.”

Pacquiao won the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title last November by beating Cotto via technical knockout in Round 12.

Clean fighter

After Pacquiao’s victory over Cotto, talks on the Mayweather-Pacquiao match-up swirled immediately. They were supposed to face off on March 13 fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Talks to seal the deal collapsed when the fighters’ camps disagreed on the drug testing protocol.

Mayweather, his father Floyd Sr. and other members of his team even alleged that Pacquiao was taking performance-enhancing drugs. The Filipino boxing icon already filed a defamation complaint against them.

“I’m not against blood testing. Just not the day of the fight. I’ve had that happen in the (first) [Erik] Morales fight. I lost that fight and my body felt very weak. I don’t feel I recovered. That is why I don’t want blood testing close to the fight,” explained Pacquiao.

He also mentioned that he is a “very honest person” who prays and believes in God. He said his success in the ring only reflects the hard training he undergoes before every fight.

“I’m a clean fighter who trains very hard. People don’t know how hard I train and the sacrifices I make.”

He even hit back on Mayweather, saying that the American probably did not really want to face the 7-time world champ.

“I don’t think Mayweather wanted the fight. He had too many reasons (that lead) to cancel the fight. I’m not disappointed because I know I’m not the one who didn’t want the fight and I have to defend myself.”

Clottey’s disappointment

Pacquiao, who is training in the United States for his title defense, said he is not underestimating his opponent.

“I didn’t expect I would end up fighting Clottey but I will prepare myself and train hard,” he said.

“Clottey is a strong guy and a good fighter. He’s a former world champion. I am sure we will have a good fight and create a lot of excitement in the ring.”

The Ghanian, on the other hand, is still encountering problems in his fight preparations because his trainer, Godwin Dzanie Kotey better known as Alloway, has not yet secured a US visa.

“I am fine but tell Ghana that they’ve disappointed me by not giving my trainer visa to come here with me,” Clottey said in a GhanaWeb.com article.

“The only thing I can tell you is everything is fine with me and I’m ready to fight [even] if the government can’t help because it’s my life on the line,” added Clottey.

Let's once again welcome the author of "The Arc of Boxing" into the doghouse . I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did talking discussing our sport with it's foremost historian.

David Tyler - Mike, in our last interview we focused on your terrific book "The Arc of Boxing: The Rise and Decline of the Sweet Science”, Have sales improved since the doghouse boxing interview?

Mike Silver - David they have been going very well thanks to you and the staff at doghouse boxing. I've had several orders and I am pleased with the overall response and enthusiasm for the book. The only drawback has been that several boxing fans have inquired about ordering the book but the price ($ 44 dollars) turns them off. Of course I believe the book is well worth it considering what the reader will get in return. Without trying to sound biased I sincerely believe the type of information contained in my book is available nowhere else. But I understand if some fans just can't make themselves pay $44 for a book.

DT - I know of at least 10 people in the business who have read "The Arc of Boxing" and become fanatics about learning more about the glory days of boxing. Have you ever had someone say that the book was not worth the price? (*See Link provided Below to order a personally autograph copy of "The Arc of Boxing".)

MS – No, and that's the point I'm making when I say "The Arc of Boxing" is worth every penny if you are a serious boxing fan.”

DT - Mike, you made the statement that once a person has read "The Arc of Boxing" they will never look at a fight the same way again. Last Saturday night I was watching boxing on one of the cable networks and here was a championship fight featuring Tony DeMarco and Edwin Valero. I had never seen Valero before but as I watched him I could not help but think of "The Arc of Boxing" and the many references to the lack of pure boxing skills by contemporary fighters. Valero just stood flat footed, hands held lower than his chest and directly in front of his opponent. I immediately used the "Arc of Boxing" as a reference tool and sure enough, on page 71 you mention the lack of experience by Valero who has knocked out every opponent with 19 victories coming in the first round. This with at total of 26 fights under his belt. What I can't understand is how we got to the point that a club fighter with no boxing skills is considered one of the best fighters on the market today?

MT – I’ve only seen Valero fight once. I was impressed by his obvious natural power, but 19 one round KOs indicate he is either the greatest puncher that ever lived or has made a career of fighting mostly glass chinned tomato cans. I’ll go with the latter. Right now he’s a hard punching tough club fighter with average boxing ability and that's all you need to be a champion today. Years ago, with the limited experience he’s acquired up to now, Valero would still be fighting eight round preliminaries. Clottey: Pacquiao in for a tough fight

DESPITE internet reports that he has been cramming in his training for his March 13 fight against Manny Pacquiao, Ghanaian Joshua Clottey has expressed confidence he has what it takes to beat the Filipino boxing star.

In a report carried by Fightfan.com, Clottey was quoted as saying: "I have a stiff jab and I will throw it a lot against Pacquiao. He will be coming to me and you’ll see what I can do. I will stay in front of him with my tight guard using a stiff jab. He’s going to get hit while he’s traveling in."

Pacquiao’s camp has repeatedly noted that Clottey is bigger and has never been stopped in his past fights but trainer Freddie Roach is confident his ward can handily win.

Clottey is training in Florida but recent internet reports have claimed he has not been focused in his regimen. Roach, meanwhile, has even ordered Pacquiao to slow down in his training.

In a recent interview on the Krystal Hart Show, however, Clottey said: "I’m running a lot and I’m training hard. I’ve beaten welterweights for years. If you look at me from head to toe I’m a big guy and I need to train hard to make the welterweight limit. In the past I may have over-trained but I feel comfortable now at 147."

Pacquiao took time off from his training at Roach’s Wild Card Gym last Saturday (Sunday in Manila) to watch five Filipino fighters, led by Nonito Donaire Jr., take on Latin opponents.

DALLAS, Texas - The stars came out for the Lone Star State for the 59th NBA All Star Game last Sunday (Monday morning in Manila). Celtics legend Bill Russell, hip-hop mogul P. Diddy, comedian Chris Tucker, rapper Drake, Knicks die-hard Spike Lee and actress Gabrielle Union dotted the glitzy landscape. During the game, another star quietly entered Cowboys Stadium. He strolled with his entourage and looked for his VIP seat.

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. made a nondescript entry into the scene. Cowboys Stadium was set aside for Mayweather versus Manny Pacquiao. Mayweather said, “No thanks." Then, those who wanted to watch Floyd and Pacman in the ring, including many of the 2010 NBA All-Stars, retorted, “No way."

“Oh, I was very, very disappointed that the fight didn’t push through," West All-Star Chauncey Billups, a fan of Pacquiao, admitted. “I love Manny Pacquiao. He’s one of the greats. I love his heart. I love his passion out there and he fights to the end."

Many of the 2010 NBA All-Stars believe Pacquiao knocks out opponents the way LeBron James slams the ball. Successful athletes, after all, recognize skill and resolve the way Simon Cowell identifies talent. They also recognize a missed opportunity for Mayweather to test his greatness against Pacquiao.

“Pacquiao’s just tenacious," West All-Star Brandon Roy said. “I mean he goes in there and not only gives a great show but a great fight, that’s why you really want to see him in boxing. He’s just a great athlete, a great competitor and he fights at a high level every night."

“I’m very impressed with Manny Pacquiao," 1st time All-Star Deron Williams added. "He’s arguably the best pound-for-pound fighter and the way he has been beating people has been ridiculous."

Billups, Roy and Williams refused to predict a winner in a Pacquiao-Mayweather bout. They all agreed, though, that a showdown would feature two great fighters.

“I don’t know who’ll win that fight," 5-time All-Star Chris Bosh said. “That’s why it’s going to be a great fight. No one knows what’s going to happen."

Mayweather still has loyal fans. 1st time All-Star Derrick Rose is one of them. Still, if Mayweather slid into Sunday’s game with little fanfare, Pacquiao blasted the boxing scene like a Dwight Howard two-handed slam. Pacquiao, who’ll face Joshua Clottey at Cowboys Stadium on March 13, didn’t quietly enter the consciousness of the NBA’s boxing fans, he rocked their world.

“I’m just a big fan of boxing so I would love to see both those guys get in the ring together but just because it didn’t push through now doesn’t mean it won’t push through," an optimistic Roy said. “I still have high hopes that it will push through eventually."

“I love Manny Pacquiao," West All-Star starter Amare Stoudamire asserted. “He’s a great boxer. He was totally ready to fight Mayweather. I was waiting to see that fight but it didn’t happen."

When asked who would win the bout between Mayweather and Pacquiao, Stoudamire had one, clear choice. "Pacquiao".

Mayweather: Pacquiao should get less if fight pushes through

The trash-talking former holder of the mythical title of pound-for-pound king went on the offensive over the weekend, expressing his wonder to his hometown paper – the Grand Rapids Press – why Manny Pacquiao would not agree to “a $25 million drug test.”

Still resentful about the collapse of the lucrative bout with Pacquiao, Mayweather said that if their camps revive talks about a matchup in the next few months, the Filipino will have to agree to get less of the money at stake especially if his May 1 fight with Shane Mosley fares better than Pacquiao’s March 13 bout with Joshua Clottey.

“Instead of 20 or 25 (million dollars), he may have to drop to 15 or 17 and you know me, they have to throw that extra 5 or ten on mine and we can rock and roll. Take it or leave it,” said Mayweather.

Pacquiao and Mayweather appeared on their way to agreeing on a deal but Mayweather demanded that Pacquiao undergo random blood testing to level the playing field even though Pacquiao has never failed a drug test ever.

While Mayweather insists that he is not accusing Pacquiao of somebody who uses performance-enhancing drugs, the American fighter sounds off that the current pound-for-pound king is guilty.

“The thing is this: I’ve never seen a guy who didn’t want to take a $25 million drug test. If you’re clean, take the drug test.”
Mayweather lamented the fact that he had agreed to an unheard-of demand by Pacquiao on the issue of penalties on excess weight.

“In my clause, he told me if you would weigh over 147 I had to pay him $10 million for each pound. I agreed but he didn’t agree to my terms and we both would have had to take tests. It wasn’t just steered toward him. It was both me and him.”

Stung by Mayweather's nasty accusation, Pacquiao has filed a defamation lawsuit against him as well as the Oscar De La Hoya-owned Golden Boy Promotions.

Pacquiao, meanwhile, is right on track in his preparation against Clottey even though he took a break when he traveled to Las Vegas to throw his support behind the Filipino fighters who fought there.

Pacquiao told a Manila-based station covering the fight at ringside that he didn’t find it hard to regain his old fiery form because he was coming off a big fight.

Over at Clottey’s training camp in Fort Lauderdale in Florida, the Ghana banger is said to be awesome as well during sparring sessions, his chief handler Vinny Scolpino told ace fight scribe Mike Marley.

“He’s on target, he’s beating the crap out of people in sparring and I would say he is definitely on his A game,” said Scolpino.

LAS VEGAS (AP)—Nonito Donaire knocked out late replacement Manuel Vargas in the third round Saturday to retain the WBA interim super flyweight championship.

The Filipino controlled the bout throughout before flooring Vargas for good with a solid right uppercut at 1:33 in the third.

“It was a matter of relaxing and working my game plan,” Donaire said. “I went side to side, leading with the jab, then landed that hard uppercut.”

Donaire had been scheduled to fight Gerson Guerrero, who failed a pre-fight physical and his fellow Mexican Vargas stepped in.

“It was a crazy week,” Donaire said. “It didn’t matter who I fought, I simply tried to figure him out.”

On the undercard, WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel knocked out Ciso Morales at 2:06 of the first round with two devastating body shots. Morales hit the canvas in obvious pain and was unable to beat the count.

Eric Morel earned a split-decision victory against Gerry Penalosa in a WBO interim bantamweight title fight. The judges scored it 115-113 and 116-112 in favor of Morel and 115-113 for Penalosa.

Floyd Mayweather continues his 'Anti-Pacquiao' campaign

Floyd Mayweather is continuing his one man crusade against the drug problem in boxing one interview at a time, and predictably never misses an opportunity to bring Manny Pacquiao into the discussion.

Rather than concentrating on his upcoming fight against Shane Mosley, all Floyd seems to be doing lately is talking about Pacquio and how he backed out of the fight and wouldn't take what he called a '$20 million dollar drug test'.

Before Floyd makes anymore impassioned speeches about cleaning up boxing he should remember two things.

Firstly that Pacquiao has never tested positive for anything so continuously bringing him up and accusing him of backing out of the fight is rather moot.Secondly if anything Mayweather should be keeping quiet about drug use in the sport when he himself has been using a widely banned drug for most of his career.

Perhaps Mayweather thinks that by repeating the same answers over and over again to each interviewer he talks about, he can somehow turn public opinion in his favor. Clearly his baiting is having little effect on Pacquiao and his team, who appear to be making quick progress in preparing for Joshua Clottey.

Along with his recent comments about not caring about the fans and claiming that Manny needed him and not the other way around, Floyd just seems to be digging himself ever deeper into unpopularity. continue reading
